When we’re younger, we often have a lot more time to follow our dreams and passion.
Although we often know pretty early on in life what things we’re passionate about, as we get older we need to work more and more hours to keep up with the daily responsibilities of our lives.
Fortunately, if we stay focused when we’re young, we can pour some of that energy into talents and hobbies that will sustain and entertain us for the rest of our lives.
Perhaps one of the most common ways that people stay creative and blow off steam is by playing music.
While playing music alone can be enjoyable and therapeutic, some of the most passionate musicians play in orchestra or band as well.
Still, one thing that sometimes goes unsaid about joining orchestra or band is that having such strict, stringent practice of classical music can get a little bit boring and dry sometimes.
To fight back, it’s important that the members of these groups have a little fun on their own—and that’s what a group of trombone players in one viral video online.
The clip was originally posted by trombonist Mohamed Gamal.
When it begins, it shows an orchestra practicing as normal like any other day.
The piece of music they’re playing is “Montagues and Capulets” by Prokofiev.
As one might expect from this kind of song, the sound is big, loud and dramatic, and all of the players are playing their hearts out. Though it seems like any other idea, the camera is trained on the trombone section.
Although they’re all playing the correct music at the beginning, it definitely looks like they’re up to something.
A few moments later, one of the musicians pulls out his phone and brings up a new piece of music.
After that, the rest of the orchestra hits a particularly dramatic swell and the trombones play their accompanying part. Next, they take a breath and they’re ready to strike.
When the conductor turns back to them, they all start playing the “Imperial March” composed by John Williams for Star Wars. As it turns out, the music fits pretty well over what they’re already playing and at first, nobody notices what’s going on.
A second later, everybody in the orchestra starts laughing hysterically.
For their part, the trombones don’t get much farther through the section until they start laughing as well.
After that, a spontaneous round of applause breaks out—the prank was definitely a huge success, and the conductor isn’t even upset!
Although nobody expected what happened that day, the prank was pretty clearly a huge victory online as well. After all, the clip has been viewed some 11 million times on YouTube!
Even though this mostly just seems like a throwaway lark, there’s still something of a message to the video.
Above all, it’s important not to take life too seriously.
Although Aly, one of the trombonists behind the prank, is still an excellent musician, he has always kept his sense of humor. He also gives back—the picture above shows his work with Ghetto Classics, a program in Kenya that teaches music to and uplifts children living in the slums.
Nobody likes art that’s completely dry and has no heart behind it—after all, it’s important to keep a full perspective on life. By showing their creativity in an irreverent way, they made the practice session better for everyone in the crowd that day.
