You’ve seen enough talent auditions to know the general routine: person walks up on stage, performs, gets judged and leaves. Wham, bam, thank you, ma’am. But when this a cappella group finished their audition, the crowd was in for a pleasant surprise…
OneVoice is an a cappella group composed of sixteen to eighteen-year-old students from Memphis, Tennessee.
“We’re part of a 12-member, high school a cappella group,” member Hannah Grey explains.
“We come from all different parts of the school. We have football players, academics, artists— but singing has brought us together.”
The award-winning group is led by JD Frizzell and composed of Meredith Druelinger, Chandler Booth, Megan Cheng, Sydney Sparks, Hannah Gray, Anna Jones, KK Mohler, Jeremy Beloate, Austin McElveen, Wes Abington, Jeremy Moore, and Dayton Leach.
According to their Facebook page, OneVoice is considered “a leader in contemporary a cappella movements”. But, as the members tell the camera, they are more than just singing partners— they are best friends.
“We don’t just sing together. We hang out 24/7. We go to the movies. We go eat together.”
When the Briarcrest Christian School students describe this connection in a pre-recorded interview, they are quick to point out that their friendship is purely platonic. “There are no romantic relationships within the group,” Hannah says. “We’re all like brother and sister, so it would be really weird if that happened.” SPOILER ALERT— This is definite foreshadowing.
When the judges ask OneVoice if anyone in the group is dating, they say “no”— but “there might be a crush,” member
Jeremy reveals sheepishly.
Although the judges let his comment slide, judge Mel B.’s interest has been piqued by the admission, and she’s determined to get to the bottom of it before the teens leave the stage.
For their audition, OneVoice has chosen to perform an a cappella rendition of “Half the Man” by Rozzi Crane with Hannah singing the lead vocals. The song is full of power and soul with the female singer lamenting the actions of her romantic interest and calling him “half the man that I am.”
Hannah’s vocals are perfect to lead the song, with the other members creating complex, supporting harmonies.
When she hits the peak of the performance, the audience can’t help but rise from their seats. The group’s version is more powerful than the original, in my opinion. Interestingly, although there are 12 separate members, each voice can be heard in its own right.
When the teens have finished, Simon pulls a sly one, telling them: “I didn’t like it… I loved it!” The other judges have similar praises, each telling them they’ve done a wonderful job.
Mel B. however still wants to know the gossip. “Before we carry on,” she tells Jeremy, “I really need to know who this crush is of yours, young man.”
“Can you just confess? Get it over and done with, brother!”
And what follows is the most amazing promposal ever.
Jeremy says he’ll be right back with a surprise. He runs backstage and returns with a teapot.
“I don’t know if any of y’all watch The Office, but I’m going to be Jim for a minute, and I hope you’ll be Pam,” he says handing the teapot to Hannah.
When Hannah opens it, there’s a letter inside: “You make me happier than pretzel day. Prom?”
OneVoice made it through the audition with an enthusiastic response— and since being uploaded to YouTube, their memorable audition has been viewed over 7 MILLION times.
