It takes a lot of courage to step on stage and not only audition before a panel of judges, but also on television that will be potentially broadcast around the world. That is enough pressure to make even a seasoned performer shake in their shoes. But for a lot of contestants, it’s not just the thought of being on TV that bothers them so much as the panel of judges that give them a case of the nerves. Especially when one of those judges is Simon Cowell himself, notorious for speaking his mind.
Olivia Garcia was only 16-years-old when she appeared before the judges.
She was their final contestant and after a long day of auditioning Simon said:
You are our final contestant. Thank God because I can’t take any more of this.
Olive didn’t waste any time to announce that she was not about to go down without a fight and told Simon:
I’m going to try my hardest.
The cards were stacked against her.
She was ready to compete in the 6-Chair Challenge portion of the competition and already the cards were stacked against her. All six of the chairs had already been filled so she knew she had a lot of convincing to do before the judges were willing to give up a seat for her. They meant business, and she knew it. Though she might have tried to hide her nerves, Simon Cowell mutters under his breath:
She’s so nervous.
It was now or never for Olivia and Simon wished her the best of luck.
Olivia took a deep breath and grabbed the microphone to deliver a performance she could be proud of. Simon’s opinion of her quickly changed and it occurred to him he was going to have to make a very tough decision. The other six contestants watching from their chairs also began sweating realized that this young lady just may be able to take one of their spots out from under them.
She finished her performance and was overwhelmed with emotion seeing not only the response of the audience, but also the judges.
The first judge started off saying:
Olivia, that was absolutely flawless.
The judges were obviously more than impressed and admitted they wouldn’t want to be Simon to have to make the decision whether she stays or he has to send another one of the girls home he has already chosen. Another judge gives Simon the warning,
You definitely – and I will fight Simon for this, have to have a seat.
And the moment comes for Simon to speak.
He confesses right away,
Right now, Olivia, you are about to make my life very difficult because I have to give you a chair. That was outstanding.
The crowd roars in approval as Olivia has tears running down her face. The rest of the girls have to wait for Simon’s decision and their nerves were running high waiting for Simon to decide which one of them had to go home.
The ending of the day was most certainly a dramatic finish and Simon eased everyone’s nerves as best he could by walking on stage and giving them his words of encouragement.
