Olivia Armstrong performed at KAR Live in San Gabriel, California. This was not her only dance and also performed a jazz solo to Poker Face by Lady Gaga. This little girl is already multifaceted at the age of 8. The KAR Live dance competition was held over Olivia’s birthday weekend as she went from 7 to 8. Her performances were highly regarded and a great way to kick off her eighth birthday.

The Omaha School of Music and Dance states that, “Lyrical dance is a style that combines ballet and jazz dancing techniques. It is performed to music with lyrics so that it inspires expression of strong emotions the choreographer feels from the lyrics of the song. This style concentrates on an individual approach and expressiveness of such emotions as love, joy, hurt, or anger. It does not concentrate on the dancer’s precision of movement.”
Olivia was only seven performing her lyrical dance. One might think that a seven year old might not be able to express very strong emotions because they have not experienced really strong emotions yet. That is not true about Olivia Armstrong. She might not have personally felt certain emotions needed for the performance but she still beautifully portrayed the emotions through her dance.

2020 has been a hard year for the entire world through the pandemic. It has been trying for every person and that includes children such as Olivia Armstrong. So, to perform a lyrical dance to “The Prayer” is the most fitting to end her dance season of 2020. The song is about praying for safety, guidance, and hope during a time when such things feel rare.
