Proposing to the women you love is a huge deal.
You have to wrack your brain trying to think of the perfect scenario because you only get one chance to get it right. For this Ohio State football player, he used his team, his platform and the element of surprise to sweep his girlfriend off of her feet while asking for her hand in marriage.
She didn’t see this coming at all!
Drue Chrisman is a kicker for the Ohio State Buckeyes who went viral for his surprise proposal during a packed spring game.
It started off as a normal spring day in April 0f 2019 for Chrisman’s girlfriend, Avery Eliason. She planned on watching her boyfriend play football as she had so many times before—only this time was different. Little did she know that Chrisman was planning on catching her off guard with a big question.
Chrisman had put together an elaborate hoax to get Eliason on the field for halftime, enlisting the help of his long snapper, Liam McCullough, and his girlfriend.
The plan was to have McCullough’s girlfriend tell Eliason that they were having a kicking contest between the specialists’ girlfriends.
At halftime, Eliason ran onto the field ready to kick the ball—but the biggest surprise of her life was hiding around the corner.
Even attempting a field goal in front of a packed crowd is a big deal, as it’s not every day you have thousands starring at you as you do something you’re untrained in.
She later explained how nervous she was in an interview:
“I was nervous to kick a ball in front of everybody. I’ve never done that before, but I didn’t really suspect anything other than that. I was planning to just kick the ball the best I could and then I thought it would be cool to go down on the field. It was the first time I’ve been down on the field actually during a game. So yeah, I really had no idea that anything other than that was going to happen.”
When Chrisman got down on one knee to catch the long snap, Eliason had no idea it wasn’t the snap that he was getting down for.
The “contest” was set, Chrisman got down on one knee and caught the snap while his girlfriend started running up to kick the ball.
That’s when Chrisman put his arm up signaling her to stop. She was confused at first, but not for long.
Chrisman had a ring hidden by his leg!
After a moment, he reached over and grabbed it while Eliason stood there, unsure of what was going on.
As soon as Chrisman pulled the ring out, Eliason started crying and the crowd erupted in cheers.
Eliason puts her hands over her mouth as she fights back tears and immediately nods her head yes.
After that, Chrisman gets up and lifts her off of the ground before his team rushes in to congratulate them.
Eliason even had a chance to explain her feelings right after the big moment:
“He’s the love of my life, seriously. I’ve known him since we were little. I don’t know, we’ve just been through so much and I’m just so happy.”
The surprise proposal has been viewed over 8.6 million times, with 170,000 liking it.
This definitely is in the top five best proposals we’ve ever seen—she was totally shocked!
