This Flash Mob Blew The Crowd Away With 'Ode To Joy'
All it took was for the little girl to put a little money in the hat.

When we’re out walking in a city, a good street performance can make us stop right in our tracks.

Because the artist’s life is a hard one to pursue, it’s always nice to stop and acknowledge the efforts of any singer or street performer who we particularly respect. Still, if you live in a city, there are far too many street performers around you every day to stop and engage with every single one. On the other hand, sometimes seeing a ton of street performers at once can really encourage passersby to stop right in their tracks.

That’s exactly what happened in this video.

Thanks to the internet and all manner of different viral sensations, the phenomenon of the “flash mob” has spread all around the world.

For instance, the video we’re discussing today comes all the way from Sabadell, Spain. As it begins, local townspeople are milling around and going about their daily business. After a few moments, a little girl walks to the middle of a circle where a street performer with a stand-up bass is. At his feet is a small top hat for collecting coins.

Next, the little girl walks up to the hat and drops a few coins in it.

Upon doing this, the man with the bass springs to life!

As the little girl steps back, the man starts playing a few notes on his instrument that gradually form a melody. After another moment, another performer steps out with a cello and joins right along with him. Before long, it’s clear that they’re playing “Ode to Joy” by Beethoven. As soon as they’ve established the melody, the two performers are joined by a slew of others.

Before long, more and more singers and performers are coming out and a huge crowd starts gathering!

As the song swells in celebration, so too does the orchestra there to perform it!

Eventually, there are oboists, violinists, trumpeters, drummers and all sorts of other instruments in the mix as well. Everyone in the crowd has their phone out now—and one little girl even tries to climb all the way to the top of a lamppost to get a better view! Once the entire orchestra has assembled, they start into the passionate final movement of the piece and add in singing.

Needless to say, the crowd is completely enraptured by this point!

Finally, the orchestra does the same thing—except they do it twice as fast!

Although there are professional singers on the scene to sing along with the orchestra, it’s not long before all the bystanders are singing along as well. After a final ecstatic flurry of activity, the orchestra hits their final note and takes a bow. When it’s all over, the crowd gives them a huge round of applause! Although the crowd started out so small, by the end there’s almost no room left anywhere to stand.

Just imagine if you had been a tourist in the city on they day they shot this video!

Perhaps the most amazing thing of all is that all of this music and celebration started with a simple gesture.

Although it was likely planned or orchestrated beforehand, the little girl walking up and putting coins in the hat is what started the entire performance.

Although we’re not expecting an entire orchestra to appear every time we give some money to a busker, it’s a good reminder that the smallest things in life can result in huge effects for other people. And after all, if it just takes a few coins to get this result, you might as well try it on every busker you see!
