I was NOT expecting that.

It’s more or less safe to say that America is obsessed with reality shows.

Although reality shows have been around in some form since the 1940s and ‘50s, they’ve really taken off in popularity in the past 30 years or so. If you look on TV now, you’re liable to find a reality show on just about any topic that interests you. If you’re into fashion or clothing, try Project Runway or America’s Next Top Model. If it’s more about survival and competition, there’s the aptly named Survivor.

Still, the current king of the genre seems to be the musical or talent competition show.

While we each have our favorites in the genre, The Voice is pretty unique among them.

Unlike more straightforward competition shows, The Voice has contestants compete with one another on one level while the judges compete amongst themselves to coach contestants on another level. For the most part, you’ll see similar performances as on other shows where talented vocalists do inspired takes of classic songs and other standards.

Still, sometimes there’s the occasional audition that stands out from the crowd in its uniqueness.

The audition starts with all the judges turned away from the stage listening to a blind audition.

After a few moments, it becomes clear that the person singing is doing their own version of “No Scrubs,” the popular R&B song by TLC.

Although the performance definitely has some energy behind it, it’s a little bit unusual and is certainly different than the original. Although the judges are all bobbing their heads to the music, nobody is officially turning around.

But tight when it seems like it’s over, the contestant does a confident and rapid-fire take on the song’s rap verse!

Immediately after that, Kelly Clarkson is the first to smash her buzzer.

As she turns around, Clarkson is shocked at who she sees! Although the woman’s voice was so soulful and powerful, the woman onstage is relatively unassuming and even has a bit of a soccer mom vibe!

After the big reveal, Clarkson is even more into the music than she was before. As fans of the show know, Clarkson and fellow judge Blake Shelton have a bit of an ongoing competition between themselves.

Though Shelton seems a little unsure of what he’s doing, he smashes his button too at the absolute last second!

At the end of it all, John Legend says what everybody is thinking: “She’s white!”

As they evaluate her, everybody gives her compliments and comments on her song choice. For her part, Clarkson says she admired the performance and wants to be her coach—but not before Shelton has his own say.

After trying to win her over for a moment, Shelton decides on a new angle. “When you started rapping,” he says, “I mean, rapping is my thing.” At this, the whole crowd laughs.

Although Shelton is a country artist, he asks contestant Kim Cherry to keep being unexpected and to join his team!

While Cherry has a hard decision in front of her, she finally gets ready to make her decision.

As a result of his incredible sales pitch, Cherry picks Shelton! Although this show is always full of twists and turns and surprising performances, this one was particularly hilarious. In any event, Cherry’s performance perfectly showcases what people love about shows like these. Not only was she talented, she brought something unexpected to the stage and wasn’t afraid to take a risk—and then took another risk at the end by picking Shelton! It should be interesting to see how things end up for them this season.

Congratulation to Kim Cherry on her new voice coach! Check out the full clip below:
