You may know Nicole Scherzinger as the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls or as one of the co-hosts of The X Factor US, but we can guarantee that you’ve never seen her perform like this.
For the 25th anniversary of The Phantom of the Opera, Andrew Lloyd Webber, the composer of the famous musical, introduced a special performance of the title number.
This was a very special performance not only because it was at the 2011 Royal Variety Performance gala in the presence of Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal, but because the lead vocals of Christine were performed by Scherzinger.
The world has rarely seen the international pop star perform like this before.
Joined by four legendary phantoms, Simon Bowman, Earl Carpenter, Ramin Karimloo and John Owen-Jones, the performance was a memorable one!
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Broadway classic, The Phantom of the Opera became the longest running show in Broadway history in 2006.
In addition to that, it has won over 60 major theater awards. That includes seven Tonys!
Inspired by the French novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, the story revolves around Christine. In the production, she becomes the love interest of a disfigured, mysterious musical genius to the point of obsession. Since its West End debut in 1986, it has also become a Broadway hit and has been adapted to the big screen.
So as you can imagine, it would be a great honor to get to perform the role of Christine for the 25th anniversary. Without a doubt, Scherzinger lived up to that honor.
Scherzinger looks and sounds wonderful in this moving performance.
Her confidence and talent really shine through during this performance. She holds her own with the great Broadway stars that perform with her.
With The Phantom of the Opera‘s popularity and success, there have been quite a few performers to take on the soprano role of Christine. We guarantee that Scherzinger’s will end up being one of your favorites. It’s an absolutely amazing performance.
The most moving part is towards the end of the video. You won’t believe the note she holds!
Scherzinger is much more than a pop star, and this performance proves just how wide of a range she has when it comes to the roles she can perform.
We couldn’t imagine a better way for The Phantom of the Opera to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
