Both are American singers, songwriters, record producers, and actors. She is from Georgia while he is from California. And together, they sing a love song that may have been forgotten in certain circles, but is still a beautiful classic for those who know it.
“Always on my mind” was written by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher, and Mark James. the song was first recorded in 1970 and since then has had over 300 covers and renditions by big names and famous bands. It really is an amazing song.
Here’s Josh Groban and Jennifer Nettles with their rendition.
This was during Groban’s Bridges tour at the Mohegan Sun arena. Now it would be difficult to think of a partner for Josh with that silky, husky tenor style of his. But you’d be surprised at the number of people who have shared the stage with this man.
A quick search will reveal big names and while Josh is an awesome talent, he does an amazing job in blending with the different talents he’s sang with. He never overpowers them, instead making sure his voice matches with his partner’s.
Jennifer has a very powerful voice.
For a song like “Always on my mind”, she does a fantastic job with Josh, turning it in to a powerful ballad with only the help of a piano. It is Groban who starts it off,
“Maybe I didn’t love you
Quite as often as I could have
And maybe I didn’t treat you
Quite as good as I should have”
The song speaks of a lover full of regrets, admitting that he took his woman for granted, not treating her as well as he should have. The lyrics are straightforward but written from the heart. The melody certainly lends itself well to the brokenhearted. To a person whose heart is crushed by a break up or one dealing with bitter regret.
It’s one of those songs, those moments, perfect for a cold, rainy night with a drink of your choosing.
Jennifer joins Josh for the chorus, providing a lovely blend of tone and power along with Groban’s lower pitch. She holds back a bit but only because it would drown out her partner’s voice.
They compliment each other’s style beautifully.
She takes the second verse, this time utilizing her range which adds her own unique style as compared to other versions of the song. There isn’t much drama to her singing. Jennifer sticks to the octave she’s chosen, guiding herself with the piano. When Josh enters again, he provides a second voice this time, allowing his partner to shine.
The chorus allowed both singers to showcase their voices.
Both Josh and Jennifer unleash their powerful instruments, reaching notes with the use of power and range. It is pure listening pleasure, as if all the emotions of a lonely lover found a channel through these two fantastic singers.
One glance at the comments tells you the same story,
“WOW….the most unlikely pairing, but amazingly beautiful!”
Says one viewer.
“Oh my gosh, endless waves of chills!”
Says another.
While there are many versions of this song, it is the listener’s preference as to which one he would prefer. But it wouldn’t be a surprise to find this particular version in one’s top 5. Josh and Jennifer relied on raw talent. Pure skill. And that’s what this song is actually about. Raw emotions.
