As anyone who has seen the show knows, it takes some serious skill to make it on America’s Got Talent.

For those who don’t know, America’s Got Talent is a nationwide talent show which accepts contests with all manner of unique skills. Everyone who comes on has a unique backstory and an unusual ability or talent of some kind. When people get up on that stage, they’re hoping that all of their dreams might come true.

Still, sometimes appearances are deceiving—even to the judges.

On one episode in particular from the 2015 season, three friends walked onstage together to a skeptical crowd.

The three men who walked out that day were Caleb Conrad, Will Ritchie and Tyler Davis. As they explained to the judges, they had all met while they were injured playing football together in high school. While they were goofing off together, they decided to start singing as well—and realized that together, they made a pretty good team. They decided to call themselves Triple Threat.

Although their backstory is compelling, the judges aren’s sure what to make of the group.

After their introduction, the group starts into their version of “Classic” by MTKO.

As soon as the men start singing, everything changes. As it turns out, these three friends can really sing! The judges’ jaws drop as the three men trade harmonies, hit high notes and get the entire crowd on their feet. As the song ends, even the judges have to admit that they had the group pegged entirely wrong. Although the season has long since passed, this clip of Triple Threat’s adorable performance is once again making its rounds on the internet.

After watching these three perform, it’s not hard to see why they’ve gotten so much attention.

When we watch shows like these, it’s sometimes hard to identify with the people on stage. Some of them seem to have extraordinary abilities or otherworldly good looks. Part of what makes the guys of Triple Threat so charming is that they seem just like us (though they also have incredible talent). To know that a fluke situation on a high school football team led to these three friends performing on a national stage is enough to make anyone cheer. Congratulations to these guys and here’s to a long and successful career.
