Everyone knows the irresistibly catchy Luis Fonsi song, Despacito, but you’ve never heard it performed quite like this before.
During a visit to Trinity High School in Euless, Texas, The Navy Band of the Southwest put on an incredible instrumental performance of the classic track for all to enjoy.
Released in January of 2017, Despacito was written by Puerto Rican singer, Luis Fonsi, who performs the track alongside Puerto Rican rapper, Daddy Yankee.
It’s a Latin pop classic, breaking through language barriers and becoming hugely popular all over the world, around North America, South America, Europe, and beyond, helping to bring Spanish-language music back into the mainstream in many countries and winning multiple Grammy Awards.
It’s even got the most viewed YouTube video of all time, with more than 6.5 billion views! In short, it’s pretty popular, so the crowd was happy and surprised when The Navy Band of the Southwest began to play it during this high school visit.
The band is part of the Navy Music Program, made up of various ensembles and expert musicians, all performing at different venues around the Southwestern United States throughout the year.
They put on around 600 performances annually on average, but this one was extra special, with a drummer, an electric guitarist, and several brass instrument players taking to the stage and bringing the song to life like never before! The saxophone player, in particular, really steals the show!
Despacito has been remixed and covered by many different artists since it was first released, including a Justin Bieber version, a Norwegian hard metal version, a Hungarian piano version, and a Broadway style cover by Postmodern Jukebox.
Each version is special, adding something new to the awesome song, and the Navy band’s version is just as good as all the rest.
Without lyrics, we really get to savor the unique melody and groovy beat of the song, and it’s impossible to resist moving your head and wanting to grab a microphone and sing the words as the band continues to play. They really do the original song justice, with each and every band member playing his part to perfection.
A video of the performance has been shared on YouTube and viewed close to 5 million times already! There are countless positive comments down below the video in various languages, highlighting the global appeal of the song.
Many Spanish speakers have commented to express their joy at hearing a new take on a song they love, with others even saying that the Navy version is better than the original! Here are some of the top comments:
