Nadia Comăneci made history with her athleticism and dedication to the sport of gymnastics. She was the first ever to score a perfect ten at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, during which she went on to get six more perfect scores and three gold medals. It’s a feat that’s unmatched, and the 4’11” 86 pound all-muscle athlete is a true legend.

At the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, she went on to win two more gold medals, and to score two more perfect tens.

This renowned athlete started her practice in kindergarten. In just a few years, she’d been chosen to be a part of Béla Károlyi’s experimental gymnastics school.

Comăneci is definitely one of the best gymnasts in history. She’s the one who really popularized the sport worldwide by capturing the hearts of audiences.

This floor routine from the 1976 American Cup also earned her a perfect ten. When you watch it, you’ll see exactly why. It’s hard to believe that she was only 14 for this performance!

She won a silver cup for this competition overall. She also met her future husband, Bart Conner, at this event, although later in her memoirs she notes that she doesn’t really remember the meeting. They were even photographed together with their matching silver cups!

It’s amazing to watch this and see what the human body is capable of in its best form.

She may be small, but there is so much power in her tiny frame! The height she’s able to reach is almost superhuman.

Gymnasts are some of the most disciplined athletes out there, but they make it seem so delicate and elegant. It’s about making the most difficult maneuvers seem like they are as easy as lifting a finger.

Comăneci does just that with this impeccable floor routine. I simply don’t understand how it’s even possible.

What makes Comăneci’s performances so lovely, other than her pure strength and ability, is that she’s able to put little personal touches on her moves. She’s just got so much personality bursting from her tiny frame. You would think that she’d have a look of total seriousness when performing on such a huge stage, but she’s beaming with a huge smile from beginning to end. That’s the mark of a great sportsperson: a cheery attitude in the face of a huge amount of pressure.

The commentator’s remarks and enthusiasm say it all.

“She does subtle movements that just take over the crowd!”

While there are great gymnasts like Simone Biles today, many experts still consider Comăneci the very best. While this performance took place decades ago, it would still hold up as mindblowing in competition today. She was far ahead of her time.

“The first time! I’ve never seen anyone get a ten! And she deserved it, that’s what makes it so incredible.”
