For Chicago-based singer Ms. Trysh, seeing Simon Cowell in the flesh was a dream come true.
Ms. Trysh (whose real name is Kathryn Granberry) is a 57-year-old singer performing blues and R&B. “I haven’t had any training,” she told The Chicago Citizen. “Singing was a gift that was really handed down in my family.”
“Mostly all my sisters are singers, and I have a couple of brothers who play guitar; my niece and nephew sing, so we have a family of singers and artists.”
Ms. Trysh is well known in the Chicago area, performing at many local events, but she knew appearing on the America’s Got Talent Stage would be much different— mainly in that she’d be face-to-face with her celebrity crush, Simon Cowell.
Taking the stage and revealing her age, Simon initially winks, telling Ms. Trysh she “looks good”.
As you can imagine, Ms. Trysh is completely flattered. When asked what she will be doing today, Ms. Trysh tells the judges she will be singing and dedicates the song to Simon. “I have a crush on you,” she says with a laugh.
Staring directly into his eyes, Ms. Trysh begins to serenade Simon with a sultry rendition of “If I Was Your Woman”.
Hearing Ms. Trysh’s selection, the judges immediately crack up. Simon, however, looks on with a flattered grin.
Ms. Trysh’s talent is evident. Although her song choice was amusing, there is nothing funny about her voice. In fact, she has powerhouse vocals, perfect for the song she chose.
Throughout the passionate performance, Ms. Trysh wows the crowd and judges— forcing everyone out of their seats.
The entire audience goes crazy and the room is filled with cheers.
“Ms. Trysh,” Mel B. says, addressing her. “You would love to hug Simon, wouldn’t you? Come on down!” Raising from his seat, Simon makes the ‘come hither’ gesture, giving Mrs. Trysh a hug as she plants a giant kiss on his cheek.
“I’m going to have good dreams tonight,” she laughs, returning to the stage.
When asked how he felt about the performance— “I’ve got a little bit of a crush on you actually,” Simon admits.
Between her charisma and talent, Ms. Trysh manages to win over all four judges with each one voting yes.
On her way out, Simon stops her to ask one last question— and her answer takes everyone by surprise.
