If you’re a fan of YouTube, you may be familiar with the genre of dance compilation videos.
Perhaps the most famous of these videos is the “Evolution of Dance” video uploaded by Judson Laipply all the way back in 2006. At one point, Laipply’s video was the most viewed clip on YouTube (today it boasts an impressive 301 million views). While Laipply’s video is not discussed much anymore on the internet, it doesn’t get the credit it deserves for birthing an entire style of YouTube videos which live on today.
Another of these videos has recently hit the internet, this time starring a mother and son duo.
The uploaded clip was originally part of a talent show.
The dance was originally performed in Charlotte, North Carolina at Myers Park High School. The dancers are Myers Park’s guidance counselor Scott Jenkins and his mom Ginny. It was part of a talent show designed as a benefit for Susan G. Komen and breast cancer research. Although it has been uploaded to YouTube as well, the original viral clip came from Myers Park High School’s Facebook page—where it has more than 49 million views!
As the video starts, Scott and his mom Ginny get warmed up with some simple moves.
Once they’re ready, the duo launch into a tour of many different dance styles—with loud approval from the crowd!
After a little teaser of “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars, Scott and Ginny take it back to the 90s by doing their version of the Macarena. That fades into “It’s Not Unusual” by Tom Jones before being followed by “Cotton-Eye Joe” by Rednex. Although there isn’t much of a coherent order to the songs, the crowd eats it up all the same. There are plenty more highlights throughout with mother and son busting out all their best moves. The entire video lasts almost five minutes.
Once the dance is over, the duo strike a pose and the crowd goes wild.
Although the dance compilation is a well-known format, this mother and son put their own unique twist on it.
Although the performance itself is hilarious, it’s also admirable that these two were doing it all for a good cause. It’s also a reminder that no matter how old we get, we can always stay young by taking some time out of our schedules to be a little silly.
Great job on the performance, Scott and Ginny!
