No matter what it might be, following a dream is definitely a challenge.
When it comes to artistic aspirations, potential creatives need to overcome a lot of internal and external obstacles. If you want to be a singer, you have to have a good voice—but you also have to believe in yourself.
You have to be willing to put yourself out there and share yourself with the world. Sometimes, that means coming face to face with your idols and still performing at your absolute best.
That’s exactly what happened to one contestant on The Voice.
For anyone who doesn’t know, The Voice works a little differently than many other reality competition shows.
Unlike American Idol, for example, the judges can’t see who’s singing right in front of them. Every audition is a “blind audition,” where the judges have their backs turned to the stage.
If they like what they hear, they can hit their buzzers to turn around and try to recruit the singer onto their team. At the end of it all, the best singer and the best judge win the whole show overall.
On season four of the show, Shakira was one of the judges.
One particularly memorable performance happened when Monique Abbadie stepped up to perform.
Abbadie was a huge fan of Shakira’s, so she decided to pick a special song for her audition. She chose “Loca,” an upbeat song originally sung by Shakira herself.
As soon as she steps out, all the judges recognize it immediately. From the very beginning, Abbadie shows so much confidence and strength in the song—which is just what it needs!
Before long, the first one to hit his buzzer is judge Blake Shelton.
As Abbadie continues her performance, Shakira gets more and more into it.
Although it’s challenging to sing (and to perform for your idol), Abbadie does it justice—and it keeps getting better and better.
All the judges are getting more excited and everyone’s hands are hovering over their buzzers. Next up, Shakira hits her buzzer—and Usher hits his at exactly the same time!
Once everyone has done it, judge Adam Levine hits his buzzer as well.
By the end of the performance, all the judges have huge smiles on their faces.
Although Abbadie’s performance wasn’t necessarily the most technical or the most powerful of all time, she definitely brought a ton of personality to it.
Beyond that, her energy was contagious and she even got the stamp of approval from Shakira herself! Though it goes without saying, it’s not easy to perform something that your idol sang right in front of them.
Since the clip was posted, it has been viewed more than 31 million times on YouTube.
Above all, we have to tip our hat to Abbadie’s bold performance.
While it’s definitely a big risk to pick a song one of the judges sings, it paid off in this case. Although the show has seen its fair share of four-chair turns, not all of them are for songs that are as fun and playful as this one was.
Even if this performance happened back in season four of the show, it’s still one of the funniest ones we’ve seen.
