One of the coolest things about YouTube is that you can find all kinds of talented performers with a simple search.
Although it’s become a great platform for professional artists to post their work, one of the biggest thrills is to find amateur performers and see how much they have to offer the world as well.
For the most part, the people using YouTube that way are up-and-coming performers, millennials and Gen-Z people who are trying to make a name for themselves. Still, sometimes the most talented people come from the older generations.
And that’s definitely the case for the video we’re talking about today.
The clip we’re discussing was originally posted in January of 2012.
It was loaded by YouTube user Tony Martin. Though it’s unclear what the occasion is for the video, it begins with a middle-aged mom sitting behind a drum kit that’s hooked up to all kinds of sound equipment.
An announcer explains that she’ll be playing “Wipeout” by the Surfaris. As it turns out, she has an entire band with her—and she immediately starts smashing away on the kit like an old pro!
Without missing a beat, the whole band follows her lead right behind her.
At first, she’s simply grooving along to the original song the way it’s usually played.
In the meantime, there’s a saxophonist and a guitarist who pick up the melody while she handles the drums. Still, things go up a notch when they get to the first rhythmic break in the track.
Here, she deviates from the norm and starts to solo a little bit—and it’s clear she absolutely rocks on the drums! She adds in her own flourishes and rhythms and makes the song even better.
Before long, the crowd is going insane watching her hammer away!
After a few moments, the song picks up again and carries on just like before.
Although there are plenty of drumming videos on YouTube, this one is distinctive not only because of the song and the fact that it’s a mom shredding, but because it’s so good!
A few moments later, it’s time for another mini-solo in the song… and this one is even more complex and engaging than the first one! This time, she really lets herself get carried away and tries some unusual rhythms.
Still, she saves the best for last.
Towards the end, she veers away from the original completely and starts an amazing solo on the hi-hats!
The saxophonist plays some special melodies right behind her to enhance the effect and she keeps hammering away while the band plays.
At the very end, she hits nearly every part of the kit and finishes up with one last drawn out solo. When it’s all over, the crowd goes wild!
Since the clip was posted, it has been viewed nearly eight million times… and it’s no wonder why!
Although there are plenty of talented people out there, discovering new talent on YouTube never gets old.
Videos like this also prove that we never have to truly “grow up.” Although we have to learn to survive and to work our jobs, there’s always still room in our life for play and fun—and it brings so much joy to everyone else around as well! Needless to say, we’ll be going back to this video for inspiration again and again.
