There’s a unique joy in the playful antics parents sometimes indulge in, much to their children’s chagrin.
Mandy Remmell, a 29-year-old mom, and her 10-year-old son, Blake, found themselves in such a scenario during a basketball game between the Maryland Terrapins and Loyola Greyhounds.
This outing was meant to be a delightful bonding experience, watching an exciting game together.
As the game paused for a timeout, the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation.
The Fan Cam began its quest for the most enthusiastic dancers in the crowd, setting the stage with Kelly Clarkson’s hit “Since U Been Gone” blaring through the speakers.
Mandy saw this as her golden opportunity, whether for sheer fun or to playfully embarrass her son, Blake.
The camera’s search ended when it spotlighted Mandy, poised and ready to steal the show.
Dressed in a leopard print dress, she transformed her cell phone into a makeshift microphone and danced with abandon.
Her performance, full of energy and flair, captivated the audience, drawing laughter and cheers.
While the crowd was thoroughly entertained, Blake’s reaction was on the opposite spectrum.
The young boy was mortified by his mom’s public display, a sentiment that only fueled Mandy’s enthusiasm.
She ramped up her performance, even serenading Blake directly, much to his dismay.
Blake’s attempt to hide, burying his face in his sweatshirt hood, was a clear signal of his embarrassment.
He wished for nothing more than to disappear from the spotlight that his mom had so eagerly embraced.
Meanwhile, Mandy’s spirited antics continued to amuse the crowd, their cheers egging her on.
The memorable moment caught the attention of Maryland Basketball, which shared the video on Twitter.
It didn’t take long for Kelly Clarkson herself to notice, and she chimed in with a tweet, expressing her approval: “That’s my kind of mama.”
Reflecting on the experience, Mandy shared with the Washington Post her philosophy on parenting.
She believes in the value of creating fun, memorable moments with her children, even if it means a little embarrassment along the way.
For Blake, while the immediate embarrassment might have faded, the wish that his mom hadn’t serenaded him in such a public manner likely lingers.
Mandy’s flair for spontaneous performances wasn’t a one-off.
Her history of lively antics, including doing the Worm at her own wedding, showcases her love for being the life of the party.
Her enthusiasm for singing and dancing, especially karaoke, hints at more entertaining performances in the future.
The incident might make Blake think twice before attending another basketball game with his mom, perhaps opting for his dad’s company next time to avoid the spotlight.
However, the family received some goodies from the team as a thank you for their contribution to the game’s entertainment, leaving the door open for an encore.
Will Mandy take the stage again? Only time will tell.
