Ever since American Idol, the world has been flooded with all kinds of reality competition shows.
Obviously, so many of these shows exist we seem to be endlessly fascinated by them. Whenever it seems like we’ve seen everything, a new version of a show or a new contestant comes along to demonstrate just how wrong we are.
While the original Idol series was relatively straight forward, shows like America’s Got Talent have opened up the playing field to all kinds of different talents and capacities.
Still, one of the most dominant of these kinds of franchises has to be The Voice.
While the show started in Holland, it has since become a worldwide franchise with many different offshoots.
On the show, contestants step out onstage to do a “blind audition” in front of a panel of judges who have their backs turned.
The contestant then does their best singing, and if the judges like it, they can hit their buzzers to turn around and try to win that person to their team. At the end of the show, there’s one winning contestant and one winning team.
The performance we’re talking about today came from the finale of The Voice UK’s 2017 season.
The sing in question was Mo Jamil, a young man who is prodigiously talented.
Though he easily made it through the audition rounds, things got harder later on in the show as the best of the best went head to head with one another.
In the later stages, it becomes so important to choose the right songs and to reinterpret them in a way that connects with the audience. The song that Jamil chose for one of his last rounds was “Unsteady” by X Ambassadors, a song that has become a smash hit all around the world.
While it’s a powerful tune that requires a lot of confidence to pull off, Jamil was definitely up to the challenge.
From the first notes, it’s clear that Jamil’s voice is so soulful and raw.
It starts in a very gruff and rough tone that spikes up and then falls all the way down. Though the performance only gets better and better, judge Jennifer Hudson is in tears from the very beginning!
While the original is an anthemic rock song designed to move crowds, Jamil makes it much more intimate in his own way. Though he hits all the high and low notes, he also adds a much deeper feeling of raw pain into it than the original shows.
And it’s clearly connecting with the crowd and the judges the whole time!
When it’s all over, Jamil sings the last few delicate notes and steps away from the microphone.
At that, the crowd erupts into a huge round of applause! Although Hudson was in tears the entire time, it’s clear that Jamil was also touched by the performance himself—after all, he’s wiping tears away from his eyes too!
Though it may go without saying, Jamil’s performance shows that you need to put your real heart and real emotion into your art for it to truly connect. While it’s one thing to be technically perfect at a craft, it’s another to fill it with a deeper spirit. Fortunately, Jamil definitely did that here!
Congratulations to Mo Jamil on his amazing performance! Be sure to watch the whole thing in the link below:
