When the song “Help Me Make It Through The Night” was released nearly fifty years ago, the lyrics were deemed highly suggestive.
Written in 1970 by Kris Kristofferson, the song became well-known when it was recorded by singer Sammi Smith later that same year. The track’s highly charged lyrics describe a person’s need for intimacy— and when it was sung by a woman, people thought it was a bit too racy.
However, for others, the song held deeper meaning— and Michael Bublé is one of those people.
As a fan of the track, Bublé hoped to create his own rendition one day.
In this video, he explains:
“My concept had always been so strong, and in my head, it had always been a duet.”
“I had always seen it as this incredibly sad but beautiful story of two needy people that just did not have the strength to be alone anymore.”
To recreate the 70s hit, Bublé was seeking the perfect vocal counterpart.
He wasn’t sure who would perform the song with him, but upon watching the 2017 movie The Greatest Showman, he quickly figured it out.
The movie features character Jenny Lind (played by actress Rebecca Ferguson), a 19th-century superstar singer who falls in love with P.T. Barnum. At one point during the movie, a particular performance caught Bublé’s eye.
“There was this song called “Never Enough’,” he said. “There’s this beautiful scene in the theatre where she’s just singing this gorgeous song, and I realized the actress—it wasn’t her singing.”
“So, I frantically started to go to YouTube to find out who this was … Sure enough, I found Loren Allred.”
For 28-year-old New York resident Loren Allred, her voice being featured in the movie was a game-changer for her vocal career. In an interview with The Deseret News, she said:
“It was the chance of a lifetime; I was thrilled to be part of it.”
When The Greatest Showman was released, Allred’s song became the no. 1 viral song on Spotify— in the US and worldwide.
Upon discovering who was behind the enchanting voice in the movie, Bublé immediately reached out. He invited Allred to perform the version of “Help Me Make It Through The Night” he had been envisioning for so long.
“I had a serious voice crush,” he admitted.
“She walked in, and she was more than I’d ever hoped for.”
When Bublé and Allred recorded the track, it immediately went viral.
Their voices are the perfect match— and once you hear Allred sing, it’s no wonder why Bublé had a crush! Since being uploaded last month, the pair’s duet has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times. Comments on the video read:
“Michael and Loren Allred sounded so magical together.”
“I had to look her up also. Her voice is just BEAUTIFUL.”
“That was absolutely beautiful. Of course, MB was velvety… but Loren was superb!”
