They nailed the ending.

Considering the number of videos that you can find online of flash mobs you’d think this phenomenon has been around a lot longer than 2003. But that’s when it all got started. Bill Wasik, a senior editor for Harper’s Magazine, came up with the idea as part of a marketing strategy.

Although his idea was cool, the first attempt failed miserably. But it wasn’t because the people involved did a bad job. Instead, the retail store Wasik targeted somehow got wind that a bunch of people would be showing up. That eliminated the element of surprise, which is what makes flash mobs so fun and exciting.

Today, all kinds of people get involved with flash mob events

With just under 2.5 million views, one viral video involves some unexpected players. In this case, a flash mob consisted of both dental and medical students. It took a lot of work to pull it off but thanks to people like Dr. Lobb, the Dean of Marquette School of Dentistry, Dr. Lovell, the President of Marquette University, and multiple students, faculty, and staff members, they did an outstanding job.

The start of the video isn’t overly impressive

Initially, the only thing you see are hands clapping and fingers snapping. But in the background, it’s easy to hear the music. And what better song for a flash mob to choose? Footloose. Sung by Kenny Loggins, it was the theme song to the movie by the same name, starring Kevin Bacon among other top stars.

Before long, things heat up

The camera then zooms in on a small group of medical and dental students, all decked out in scrubs. Everyone’s staring at something…but what? It’s then that you see a young doctor-in-training in a white lab coat. He’s strutting his stuff. After making his way up a set of stairs, he sits down and starts moving his body to the beat of the music.

Now he’s got our attention

After jumping up from his seat, he begins lip-syncing to the song and dancing down the hallway. That’s when other medical students, also dressed in lab coats, join in. They’re all dancing along while having a blast. But the video only gets better.

Strumming his guitar

Soon, the camera zooms in on another medical student with a guitar in hand. I’m not sure if he’s really playing it, but it all looks very authentic. With Footloose blaring in the background, another group of students heads down the staircase, still singing and dancing.

It’s an official flash mob

As they make their way down the stairs, the students remove their white coats to reveal colorful scrubs. The next thing you know, there’s an entire group in a waiting area at the school they attend. Moving in perfect synchronization, they groove to the music. From the smiles on their faces, you can tell they’re having a blast.

These guys and gals are really good

The entire area is filled with students, all twisting, turning, and shaking their booties to Footloose. Some of them even do some slick gymnastics tricks. I don’t know how long they practiced before doing this flash mob event, but you have to give them credit. They nailed it.
