His name is Maxwell Thorpe. Expect to see that name more often in the coming years since this busker from Sheffield just blew everyone’s minds off during his audition.
One look at Maxwell and you would not expect him to sing the way he did. Simon Cowell’s eyes went wide the moment Thorpe opened his mouth.
And Simon is a difficult man to impress.
Thorpe has been busking for ten years and he told the judges that sometimes he would be “singing to people that aren’t listening”.
He admits to being nervous as this is the biggest crowd he’s ever sang for. But really, after this performance, he’ll be singing for way bigger audiences.
Maxwell is obviously trained. The young singer shocked the judges and his audience by singing a 1986 Italian love song. One usually performed by the likes of Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli.
The busker’s hair-raising audition had the crowd at a stunned silence before they erupted in cheers.
Thorpe was borderline shy as he stammered during his brief exchange with the judges. But his entire demeanor changed, as if there’s a switch in him somewhere.
Would you just listen to that voice!
Move over Mr. Bocelli, there’s a new guy in town and he’s got the pipes to prove it.
Close your eyes and listen. It’s almost like you’re in one of those ancient churches in the middle of nowhere. Almost like Thorpe descended from the clouds and decided to serenade us poor mortals.
Maxwell goes higher and higher, the audience erupting in cheers, the judges stunned, and his father on the verge of tears.
This man is unbelievable!
Thorpe sings his heart out, and it’s hard to believe people on the streets don’t listen and just walk by him. How is that even possible?
The four judges already knew their decision as Thorpe brought his heavenly performance to an end.
Simon Cowell praised the opera singer, saying: “You’re heading for the big time. Maxwell, that was extraordinary. Seriously, you’re so shy and quiet and then that happened.”
“I thought that made it incredible,” Simon continued.
Then Alesha Dixon commented, “Wow, wow, wow! The hairs on my arms stood up, literally as soon as you started.”
“It just felt romantic and powerful and meaningful and all the feels.”
Amanda Holden had this to say to the Sheffield singer, “I hope that going forward you feel more appreciated because these people were on their feet for you. I really hope that reaction has done something for your confidence as you are better than standing on a pavement.”
She is so right.
David Williams agreed saying, “Yes, you need to start believing in yourself because after that, you are heading for the big time.”
“Sometimes, when someone sings like that you could almost feel yourself levitating on you and that happens so infrequently and it’s a pleasure to give you your first yes.”
It’s a wonder Thorpe wasn’t showered in gold but perhaps that’s a good thing as we get to see and hear more of the shy busker.
