Matt Andersen has a powerhouse voice and excellent guitar chops.
For those who don’t know, Andersen is an excellent performer who has been musically active since 2002. He is a Canadian guitarist and singer-songwriter and his website stubbyfingers.ca shows that he tours very often and is booked through the whole of 2020. His music is available on Spotify, Apple Music & iTunes, Google Play and True North Records.
This video we’re talking about today is his performance of “Ain’t No Sunshine” song at the Pearl Theatre in Lunenburg, New Scotland. The song was originally recorded by Bill Withers in 1971, though it has since become an everlasting hit—it’s even ranked 285th on Rolling Stone’s list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time!
It’s understandable why many artists wanted to perform this song: Michael Jackson, Joe Cocker, Neil Diamond, David Garrett, Passenger, Eva Kasidi… Andersen was really just following the footsteps of his famous colleagues!
Throughout the performance, his voice is so strong and yet he controls it perfectly.
When the video begins, he calmly sits in his chair, with the microphone in front of him and a guitar on his lap. Even if he doesn’t look like the typical music star, he still wins over the audience right away with his incredible talent.
When he starts playing, his face shows off a whole range of different emotions, bringing this performance to a new level. Right after he starts singing, he gets a round of applause immediately before everyone goes mute, wanting to hear more. His strong and powerful voice sounds as though he doesn’t even need a mic! Right in the middle of the song, his voice becomes deeper and it becomes obvious—this man has some stellar skills.
He definitely gives life to those guitar strings!
His guitar playing is just as fantastic as his singing. At some point in the song, he leans back and plays an epic riff. The fact that someone is able to give such an exciting and emotional performance using only his voice and an acoustic instrument is just perfect. This video leaves us with the lesson that any performer can surprise us if we give them a chance.
Sometimes there are diamonds hidden in the most unexpected places.
Andersen makes the guitar playing seem unbelievably easy and admirable at the same time. During his performance, you ask yourself: “How on Earth did he play that so perfectly?”
The note he held at the end of the video left the audience wanting more!
His emotional performance is engaging and brings immense satisfaction to his audience. When it’s all over, the audience is ecstatic and everyone is cheering and applauding.
He accepts all that praise in a humble way and continues to play his guitar. There’s one thing we can all agree on: his skills are out of this world!
As it turns out, Andersen has been on the scene for almost 20 years.
This video was uploaded in 2009 and it has been viewed more than four million times. A lot of people commented that this man is living proof that we still have really good music!
We couldn’t agree more. Matt is an epitome of blues performance. Many people who have just discovered him commented on how sorry they are for being 10 years late. We say it’s better late than never.
