As a high school student, the last person that you want to see showing up at your gym during a pep-rally is your mom.
For 11 football players at Byron P. Steele II High School in Cibolo, Texas, this became their unfortunate reality.
The pep rally started off just like any other.
The cheerleaders did a dance routine on the floor and the band played some music for the crowd.
All of this was meant to get the football team pumped up for their upcoming game.
However, the rally wasn’t over yet.
The host of the rally asked everyone to give a round of applause for the cheerleaders’ and band’s performance.
Then she brought everyone’s attention to the “surprise performance.”
She welcomed them onto the floor and 11 masked women walked out.
As the crowd of students took in what they were seeing, you can hear one of the students let out an, “Oh my god” as they probably realized who they were looking at.
The masked dancers line up at half-court and everyone in the stands is cheering loud.
The music comes on over the speakers and the 11 women dance out of their line and spread out across the floor.
Some of the kids have no doubt recognized at this point that their mom is standing out there.
All they can hope for now is that no one else in the crowd will notice who the women are.
However, all hope is lost for the students when the moms throw off their masks and reveal to the entire school exactly who they are.
The song Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae) by Silentó comes on and the moms get right to work.
Of course, the crowd is loving every second of this performance.
I’m not so sure that the same can be said for the sons of the mothers in the crowd.
Now, this isn’t to say that moms aren’t doing a great job–because they are.
This choreography clearly took some time and effort to put together.
It’s just that, if my mom was out there, it wouldn’t matter how well she was dancing, I would still be extremely embarrassed.
However, embarrassment wasn’t the intent of the dance.
The woman who put the entire thing togtehr, Aprill Williams, is the mom of one of the football players.
The goal was to pump the team up for its first playoff football game.
The San Antonio Express-News covered the story and quoted Williams as saying:
“The boys are doing really well this year and we wanted to do something to show our support for them.”
Another dancer-mom in the group, Melissa Fields, shared just how much went into making this performance happen for their kids:
“My legs were shaky and it felt like my knees were going to buckle,” she laughed. “It was cool to come out of our comfort zone and show support for the boys. If I went to a club right now, I wouldn’t know what to do. I went on YouTube and thought ‘oh no,’ there is no way we would be able to pull this off.”
At the end of the day, the moms did great and their kids seemed proud of them for getting out there and showing their support.
