Did you know that Harlem is home to one of the most exciting dance companies in the United States? Well this Dance Theatre troupe took social media by storm with this masked dance routine.
The Dance Theatre of Harlem celebrates dance anytime and anywhere
The Dance Theatre of Harlem put out a video that featured several of their ballet dancers showing their skills in tune to “New Bach, 3rd Movement”. The video begins with sweeping shots of Harlem’s brightest and most colorful sights along with messages urging caution during the global pandemic.
On a quiet subway, these performers make a powerful statement
After introductions and opening credits are made, the dance begins. And it begins strong with a stunning sequence featuring two dancers twirling and and spinning atop an empty subway platform.
Every step is choreographed to show off the elegance of these performers as they sail across their improvised stage. Even the movements of the subway train behind them becomes a part of the show as a moving backdrop to give their movements life and energy that they couldn’t do on a standard stage.
Watch these dancers by the water in a gorgeous segment
Check out the energy when the show comes outside. The performers dance on a bridge with a clear view of water behind them. The bright natural lighting and the smooth even walkway offers an exquisite light as the larger troupe synchronize and perform.
Credit goes out to the cameraman whose exceptional work highlight the individual dancers. They capture these dancers during their strongest moments which blend perfectly with the classical music composition. It’s almost as if the song was written for these Harlem ballet stars.
The dancers perform a breathtaking routine just outside…
The video then cuts to an incredible women’s only sequence outside of what looks like a cathedral square. The combination of these amazing women in their colorful outfits in front of these grand classical structures just hits home for any fan of ballet.
Beauty and elegance combine as dainty tiny steps and hops become sweeping movements that have captured hearts online.
A subtle message for mythology buffs
The video then takes us to a sweet scene against a wall covered in graffiti style art. Watch how these two dancers frame their steps in front of the word “Apollo”. This clever choice is a nod to mythology buffs who will know that Apollo is the Greek God of music and poetry.
It certainly seems appropriate since these women are poetry in motion.
Their business is to…
The scene shifts to what looks like the outside of an office building in Harlem’s downtown. A large group of dancers perform what may be the highlight of the video. So many steps coordinated. The colors and lighting do a great job of highlighting the masks they wear, and each dancer makes their presence known and felt.
The routine that made the video go viral
But no part of the performance hit quite as hard as the subway dancers from earlier. There’s just something about their movements that feel like it punctuates the entire show. You can imagine viewers slamming their like buttons as the dancers hands reach out to one another and they cross each other with grand leaps and spins.
