If you have never seen an episode of American Idol before, you are in for a treat with this audition!
Many of the most memorable auditions have to do with talent, but they also typically focus on what most people would call sob stories.
Meaning, a contestant had been or is currently going through struggles that made it almost impossible for them to make it to American Idol.
Marcio Donaldson walked into his audition with his son on his hip and a big story to tell. His childhood was not easy and even as a 28-year-old, he is still getting curveballs in life.
“We lived in a roach-infested apartment. My mother tried her hardest, but, children services wound up placing my sister and me in the system.”
While he was growing up in the foster system in Compton, California, he took refuge in his music.
Music helped Marcio, but his sister struggled with drug addiction and when she had a baby, her addiction issues wound up getting him taken away from her. That is where Marcio got involved.
“The police and the social worker came to my home. They brought him – here’s this week old baby. They said, ‘you have to decide if you’ll keep this child or he goes in the system.'”
All it took was one look at his nephew and Marcio knew he had to take him in as his son.
Marcio brought his son with him to his audition, as a bit of good luck for himself, and to show his son what he is capable of.
As soon as Marcio walked into the room with Rashad in his arms, judge Luke Bryan asked if he could hold him!
Rashad is such an easy-going little guy, he happily went to the county star. It was the perfect spot to watch his dad sing!
For his audition, Marcio chose the song “Jealous” by Labrinth which impressed judge Katy Perry.
While Marcio sang, Luke couldn’t stop himself from interacting with Rashad to see if he liked the music!
Once Marcio was done (and in tears from all of the emotions), Lionel Richie was the first judge to comment on his performance.
“Very good young man, very good. That was quite moving. You have range, my friend.”
Marcio was so overcome with emotion, Lionel just had to get up and give him a hug!
All of the judges were so impressed by Marcio and they loved how into it Rashad was as well.
Luke Bryan was happy to dole out even more compliments, after suggesting Rashad would give his dad a “thousand yes,
“Your voice is a real voice. That’s what we’re after, the real voice. Is it technically perfect, Nah man, it’s real. You ride that horse as far as you can!”
After all of that, it should come as no surprise that the judges had to vote yes for Marcio!
But the person who got the Golden Ticket to Hollywood was actually Rashad!
