America’s Got Talent: The Champions had an unexpected visitor.
For those who don’t watch the show, America’s Got Talent pits singers from around the country against each other in a vocal competition. Still, nobody expected to see a singer quite like Marcelito Pomoy on the show.
As the old saying goes, we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover—because Marcelito Pomoy nearly got a Golden Buzzer as a result of his unique performance… still, he was halted because Howie Mandel said it was too early in the show.
Even so, Pomoy was confident enough to win it all.
Pomoy entered the stage with his wife before his video introduction was shown onscreen. After that dramatic entrance, the judges interviewed Pomoy and his wife. His wife told the judges she was not there to perform but just to support her husband all the way.
For his part, Pomoy told the judges he won on Philippines Got Talent way back in 2011. When Simon asked if he was there to win, Pomoy replied with a big yes!
As he started singing, he immediately captivated the crowd.
When Pomoy sang the first lyrics, a womanly voice rang out through the stadium. Howie Mandel had a priceless reaction when he was caught on camera asking her co-judges if that was really his voice.
The audience just looked at each other in shock. It seemed like he had been taken over by a woman’s voice, and the viewers couldn’t help but drop their jaws in awe.
Before long, Pomoy shifted into his other register.
If X-Men’s Mystique is a shapeshifter, Pomoy is what we call a voice-shifter! From Celine Dion’s part, he changed seamlessly to the Andrea Bocelli part—in other words, from a soprano to a deep baritone effortlessly.
In essence, Pomoy was singing a duet alone—perhaps we can call that a solo-et! Only a few people can do what he does, and it’s clear he worked really hard to perfect it.
He also had a wonderful and mesmerizing ending to his performance.
Everybody waited for the climax of the song, and once again, the judges and the audience were surprised. All of them cheered for the amazing singer when he sang Bocelli’s verse with ease and then proceeded to end his act with the female part once again.
The judges gave Pomoy a standing ovation, and the crowd also stood up. Some of them were jumping up and down with joy! His wife hurried to the stage to give him hugs and kisses. “I was not expecting that voice,” said Terry Crews, the host of the show.
Before long, the judges sounded off on his performance.
“That is so unique,” Mandel says. “You are a beautiful, wonderful singer with a young woman trapped inside of you.” For her part, Dixon said it was “absolutely brilliant.” Judge Heidi Klum had similar things to say, namely that the performance was “out of this world.” Finally, Judge Simon Cowell said he looked forward to seeing him in further rounds.
The audience urged the judges to hit the Golden Buzzer… though unfortunately, he didn’t quite get it. When this video was posted on YouTube on January 13 it became the number one trending video with over nine million views!
