When Marc Métral walked onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage, he revealed that he had brought a special guest with him— an adorable white dog, Miss Wendy.
“First time I saw Wendy, I thought she’s the one,” he revealed in a pre-recorded interview.
“She’s so pretty. Wendy’s my best friend.”
Marc, who lives in Paris, has been performing with Wendy for the past five years and has been featured on television in France. In 2015, however, the two decided to try their skills in the big leagues, competing for the coveted Britain’s Got Talent prize.
Although Marc didn’t take home the competition, he became one of the judges’ favorite acts. Before the season premiered, Cowell told TellyMix:
“One of my favorites [acts] is on the first show. It’s a dog that does something I’ve never ever seen in my life.”
In the audition video, you see Marc place Wendy on a pedestal. Then he asks her to greet the crowd.
Wendy seems oblivious to Marc’s commands. “Say something,” Marc persists. To everyone’s amazement, the dog responds with ‘no’.
Hearing the dog speak, the audience immediately gasps. Simon’s face drops in a hilarious fashion as he wonders if this is for real.
“I think everyone is going to be talking about this act,” he said prior to the episode being broadcast.
“I was literally left open-mouthed when I saw it.”
Marc begins asking Wendy questions— and each time, Wendy provides a hilarious response.
Throughout the performance, Wendy does everything from talking to singing, to meowing like a cat— and the entire audience is amazed.
Turns out, however, that Wendy’s act meant something special to Simon, in particular.
“For nine years,” Amanda revealed after the audition.
“Simon has said he wanted a dog who could meow or sing. And your dog did both those things.”
“I don’t know how she does that… but it was incredible,” Simon tells the man.
As mentioned, Marc and Wendy didn’t go on to win the competition, but they did make it to the semi-finals where they gave another amazing show.
Although most people loved Marc and Wendy, the act later drew controversy from animal advocates who claimed Marc’s routine was a form of animal cruelty. In response, Marc later stated: “[Wendy] loves performing and I would never put her in a situation that would cause her distress.”
“She gets excited when we go to work and is always comfortable on stage.”
