Playing piano is one of those things that seems easy, simply because we get to see so many talented people do it. How hard could it be? We type on keyboards all day long, how difficult can it be to hit the right musical key at the right time to produce a beautiful and harmonious sound? Anyone who’s ever tried to play a piano without any training will tell you: it’s very difficult.

Probably one of the people in the world who make it seem easiest has to be Evgeny Khmara.

The Ukrainian virtuoso has played prestigious performances in places such as Buckingham Palace and the White House. He’s collected such acclamations as the “Man of the Year 2017” award, “The Hollywood Piano Improvisation Award 2012”, and appearances on Ukraine Got Talent, and The X-Factor as well as The Voice. He truly is a world class musician.

So when he sat down at this lonely piano in the Luqa airport in Malta, the other passengers had no idea who they were about to watch.

As casually as if he was selecting a bench on which to await his next flight, he takes his seat in front of the keys. Around him, strangers are focused on the screens of their phones or finding some other distraction from boredom. Well, an even better distraction is coming their way…

The moment his fingers begin pressing keys, it’s clear what caliber of musician Evgeny is.

His hands dart around the keys at lightning pace as Evgeny plays his classical composition. He plays with such grace and accuracy that it’s immediately apparent that he is a pianist of immense talent.

The other airport-goers react with delight and fascination.

Whenever someone sits at a piano in a public space it’s usual to get someone haphazardly clunking the notes to “chopsticks” or “Happy Birthday”. These unwitting bystanders however, get a free concert from one of the world’s premier pianists.

His music enchants the entire terminal.

Everybody surrounding this artist is captivated by Khmara’s beautiful music. Among all the frustration and anxiety that permeates airports, it must be a welcome relief to hear such sweet classical music emanating spontaneously from out of the blue. I just hope nobody ended up missing their flight!

Even the very young are spellbound.

This wee toddler, just as all the adults, cannot take his eyes off of Evgeny’s performance. His song is light and uplifting, almost inspirational, so it’s no surprise that he’s capturing not only the eyes of passers by, but their hearts too. With his left hand driving a powerful progressive rhythm and his right unleashing a magical melody, it’s no wonder why everyone is stopped in their tracks.

A terminal certainly is a smaller venue for this rock-star of the classical music world.

Having written his first composition at the age of seventeen, Khmara has as much experience as he does talent. We can only hope that the strangers in that airport terminal appreciate that out of nowhere, he decided to share his incredible talent with them just to brighten up their days.
