For those who don’t know, Original 16 is a Canadian Pale Ale.
It’s named after the 16 founding employees of the Great Western Brewing Company in Saskatoon in Saskatchewan, Canada. As part of a promotion, the brewery also put a series of musical performances on YouTube welcoming various artists, and one of them played a song in a genre known as outlaw country.
The artist was Colter Wall, and he performed “The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie.”
Colter Wall is a Canadian singer-songwriter who rose to fame upon releasing a seven-song EP Imaginary Appalachia in 2015.
He collaborated on EP with various artists from the Studio One in Regina, Saskatchewan. The song we’re hearing in this performance was released as Wall’s first single and gained a lot of attention from Brock Lesnar. It helped to raise Colter’s profile among wrestling fans. Colter later recorded the self-titled album in 2017.
His second album Songs of the Plains came in 2018, when the singer had already built a name for himself singing outlaw country and getting extremely good at it.
We are about to see that one man with his guitar and a kick drum are all that it takes to make radio country sound amazing!
Colter himself describes his music as outlaw country, and after listening to it, we have to agree that it’s a perfect description.
Colter has a perfect baritone and a gravelly voice for singing about historic and modern wanderers who’ve been dealt bad cards and experienced life along the way. If you’re listening to him for the first time, you’ll be surprised to hear his voice coming out of such a young person. What’s good about Wall’s singing is that you can almost imagine all the scenes he’s singing about.
If you thought you’d never be able to imagine the devil, just wait for Colter to sing about him!
This fellow has an undeniable talent, and a voice that goes perfectly with a bottle of scotch and a cigar. Since it was posted, this video was viewed more than 10 million times on YouTube—so other people must be hearing the same things we are!
In all, the song was haunting and perfectly performed.
As we’ve already described, the song is about a man who meets the devil at a crossroads.
Colter’s voice is heavy, but he somehow makes it hollow and pained for the sake of the lyrics. His performance shows an incredible talent in action. If you like songs with a story, you’ll enjoy this one. The best thing is that the song doesn’t reveal the whole story right away—you have to listen until the end to fully understand it. Colter’s string picking is originally refreshing, as he makes his guitar sound hypnotic.
Without a doubt, he knows how to breathe new life into “old-time” music.
Wall uses a bass drum instead of a stomp board, and the results are pretty awesome.
In case you’re interested in knowing more about Colter’s music or about upcoming tour dates, be sure to check out his official website. Colter doesn’t shy away from writing autobiographical songs, and he’s been doing a tremendous job so far. Needless to say, Country music needs more artists like him, and we wish him the best of luck and success with future work.
