Music is a powerful form of communication which can sometimes reach beyond the normal boundaries of language. It also lives in our memory in a way that other forms don’t. We often have specific songs that we tie to important moments in our life, songs we always come back to. On a smaller level, we might also stop in our tracks when we come across a new song we like—or better yet, when we come across an incredible talent in the flesh.
One example of this phenomenon has been spreading through the internet recently.
The video shows a street performance by singer-songwriter Jesse Rya, who has his own Facebook page.
In the clip, a bystander films Rya playing guitar and singing while sitting on the street. The performance is going well and starts to attract a few onlookers. One man, in particular, starts tapping his feet and nodding to the beat. After a moment, he even starts to join in! After a second, they both sing together and start harmonizing.
Noticing how the performance has grown, the cameraman adjusts his shot so both men are in the frame!
Still, the performance isn’t over yet—another man joins in and starts harmonizing as well!
The energy of the three men starts attracting even more attention and onlookers start clapping and dancing along! After the three sing together for a moment (even doing an acapella section as Ryu stops playing the guitar), the third man even starts into a freestyle rap verse. After he finishes, he drops back into the chorus—even as bystanders walk right through the middle of the performance!
Finally, Rya stops playing and the third man gives his thanks and congratulations to the group before leaving.
Above all, this story shows just how powerful music and performance can be in bringing us together.
Although the three men who performed that day began as strangers, the music let them all share a very special moment that day. Beyond just these three men, however, the video also spread even further as a result of being put on YouTube! To date, the performance has more than 35 million views and is likely only to grow from there. As this story shows, it’s important to remember a sense of spontaneity and play in life to keep things interesting.
Thanks for the reminder, guys. Be sure to check out Jesse Rya’s social media for more performances!
