In 2014, a shopping mall LaTorre in Sicily, Italy saw a performance nobody expected.
It all started when Gloria Gaynor’s famous track “I Will Survive” blasted around the space—and then everyone around jumped in with choreography without blinking!
The performance was organized by Vokal Music Academy.
Vokal Music Academy has opened its doors to the public in 2011 and has become one of the top places in Italy to learn to dance, regardless of age or previous dance experience. Located in Palermo, Vokal Music Academy aims to gather Sicilian artists and musicians, allowing them to leave a spark of Italian culture wherever they perform.
Elisa Smeriglio and Vincenzo Biondo, both amazing dancers and choreographers, are the ones who got the concept going.
Starting from scratch, Smeriglio and Biondo had a lot to do but managed to create a place where everyone could dance their heart out.
The performance began with dance lessons shown on a huge screen, all before real dancers appeared in front of the audience.
You can see that people are aware that something’s going on as soon as the music begins to play. The dancers were witty enough to place their improvised stage near a café inside the mall so that people would be caught off guard. Is there anything better than being surprised with an impromptu dance while you’re relaxing in the afternoon?
At the beginning, it just looked like there were virtual dance lessons being projected throughout the mall.
People began to watch it, and before long, everyone’s attention was focused on the same screen.
Before long, the real dancers popped out on stage—and that’s when the party started! It’s clear that all of them have some phenomenal moves, but that’s not all—some of them also have amazing singing voices as well.
You know that you’re a good singer when the whole audience sings along with you—Gloria Gaynor would be proud!
We loved hearing “I Will Survive” being embraced by a different country and culture.
Throughout the whole performance, people are hugging, dancing and singing together, having the time of their lives.
Everyone who was involved in the performance must’ve put in a lot of effort to create this vocal arrangement and choreography, and the results speak for themselves.
In all, it’s a combination of simple visuals and angelic voices which lead to a fantastic result—it’s one of those rare performances that stick with you for a long time.
Just look at all that hugging in the end. Beautiful! Some of us have forgotten what it looks like to enjoy these kind of social events with a big crowd (at least, without masks and social distancing). The current coronavirus pandemic that forced the worle to stop and distance from one another has brought a lot of negativity and sadness along with it.
That’s why it feels good to watch a video like this—to remember how it was before, and how it is going to be as soon as pandemic ends.
Thanks to everyone in the video for giving us hope and lifting the mood back from 2014! Since it was posted, the video has amassed almost 10 million YouTube viewers, and we’re sure they all feel the same.
