You never know what you will see on “Britain’s Got Talent.”
A lot of the acts are moving and can even bring the judges to tears. When Marc Spelmann of North London, England, stepped on stage and told the audiences and judges that he was going to show them some magic, they weren’t sure what to expect.
“If I told you I knew this exact outcome yesterday, a week ago, or a month ago, you’d say well that would have to be magic. But it’s not real magic. It’s interesting intriguing maybe clever but it’s not real magic. See for me real magic changed two years ago, this to me is real magic….”
Then, he explained that it wasn’t real magic.
Everyone was even more confused. Marc explained that he would need the judge’s participation. He asked David Walliams to select a crayon from a packet. He chose red. He had Alesha Dixon choose a card from a children’s deck of cards. She chose a penguin. He had Amanda Holden change a Rubik’s Cube into a random pattern. He also asked Simon Cowell to circle a word at random from a book. He chose the word “hat.”
Then, Marc started sharing a story with everyone. He also had a slideshow of photos to share. He explained how he and his wife struggled to conceive a child. He said:
“We found it was hard for her to conceive. We gave it one last chance and we were convinced that it wasn’t going to work. We did a test and it came through negative, so we resigned ourselves to adopting because we were desperate to be parents.”
They had almost given up hope and then they decided to try IVF.
They weren’t sure it if it would work. Still, they were hopeful. He continued:
“When you do IVF, you have to have a blood test, so Tessa went and had the blood test and you have to wait an hour or so, and then they said, ‘Congratulations, you are pregnant.’ It was the most bizarre moment ever. She burst into tears because it was 10 years of trying. She couldn’t contain herself. It was what I class as real magic.”
Their celebration didn’t last long. A short time after finding out she was pregnant, Tess also found a lump on her breast. It turned out to be breast cancer.
Marc explained:
“Tessa had a really aggressive form of breast cancer. It was a large tumor and they said you will need chemotherapy and a mastectomy. The only words that came out of her mouth were, ‘What about my baby?’ which says everything about Tessa. We had days of pure hell — is Tessa going to make it, is the baby going to make it?”
Tessa ended up losing her hair, and she had to have a mastectomy.
They were able to protect their daughter in the womb, and she was born healthy. Tessa eventually beat cancer and was even in the audience looking on as Marc performed on stage.
Marc was ready to reveal his magic act now. He explained that each of the objects the judges picked had something to do with his daughter. He went through the slideshow and demonstrated how his daughter, Isabella, only colors with a red crayon, had previously arranged the Rubik’s Cube in the exact same way as Amanda and sleeps with a stuffed penguin.
Then, he revealed that two years ago, he asked his daughter to pick a word in the book that she thought Simon would pick.
Shockingly, she picked the word “hat.” The judges and the audience were shocked. Even Simon couldn’t believe it. He said:
“I’m absolutely gobsmacked, I mean, first of all, thank god your little girl’s OK. I don’t know what you’ve gone through Marc, through your career trying to get the break you’re looking for, but I have a feeling this act is going to change your life. It was unbelievable.”
Amanda agreed, with tears in her eyes.
She said:
“It was absolutely incredible. We’re all parents and that’s the greatest magic in the world.”
Marc didn’t explain how the magic worked; a good magician never does. He did share an amazing story that brought the judges and the audience to tears and also helped a lot of people look at their lives and their children a little differently.
