The future belongs to the young—and especially the future of music.
It’s always nice to hear a fresh sound—one that’s different, playful and unique. That’s exactly what you get with Maggie Rogers. Her big break came with the song “Alaska,” and the American singer-songwriter was even nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2020.
Since the song was released, it has earned more than 80 million streams on Spotify and 17 million views on YouTube.
Rogers grew up as a banjo player in a rural area in Easton, Maryland.
In the beginning, she exclusively made folk music. Still, after studying in France and having a spiritual experience with dance music, she decided to mix things up to include a post-modern influence in her songs. In Maggie’s own words, her idea was to “combine folk imagery and harmonies with natural samples that she’s been picking up while hiking.” We must say, she did it successfully.
A lot of it can be heard in her song “Alaska.”
In her song, you can hear the sounds of freedom, nature and her rebellious spirit.
The video is interesting, different and simple.
It blends perfectly with Rogers’ voice. The song is from the 2019 album “Heard It In A Past Life,” and you get the feeling that past and future intertwine in the video. If anyone can bring pleasant nostalgia to a song, that’s Rogers.
The young lady appears in the middle of a green field as the video begins.
She’s wearing a hoodie and the sun is about to set. There are tall trees all around and Rogers begins to walk slowly. She sings her heart out and dances in the green field.
Rogers’ tune is catchy, charming and very soothing.
As the night falls, a lot of young people join in! They bring music, light a fire and dance together in nature. The atmosphere is beautiful, and it makes you want to join them. No wonder this song was an instant hit—it sounds amazing and has even better visuals.
As it turns out, Rogers was “discovered” by Pharrell Williams.
The first big break she had came after she played “Alaska” for Williams during a master class at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.
Pharrell’s initial comment was a simple, but enormous, “Wow.” The famous musician then explained himself saying he had “zero notes” for the song because Rogers was doing her own thing:
“It’s singular. You either like it or not, but you can’t compare it to anything else.”
We agree—Rogers is so creative with her songs, and her effort is certainly paying off.
Williams ended his praise saying that her song had “such a special quality.”
We definitely agree!
As it turns out, Rogers is now signed with Capitol Records.
Rogers had a lot of success after her song went viral. Several different record labels tried to sign Rogers, and she ended up negotiating with the leverage she had. She licenses her music through her imprint Debay Sounds, and as a result, she gets to have more control over her sound and image.
What can we say? This girl is amazing!
