Simon Cowell just went to grab a cup of coffee (tea?) during break and as soon as he came back, the crowd was roaring for a little girl singing her heart out in the audience.
Her name is Madison Taylor Baez and she is just eleven years old.
She’s always been a fan of the show, and has always wanted to audition.
Simon asks her to come forward and as soon as introductions were made, he asks her to sing again this time on stage.
And everyone, including Maddie’s dad, wanted her to do so.
That’s what happens during commercial breaks, says judge Howie Mandel.
Maddie serenaded the audience with an impressive a cappella rendition of “Amazing Grace”.
That’s what got Sofia, Heidi, and Howie turning around in their seats and Simon coming out in shock.
And that’s exactly the song Maddie sings on stage.
Simon explains:
“We do ask people in the breaks if they’d like to sing a song and I was literally just coming back in and I heard this voice, thinking, ‘Who the hell is that?’” Cowell said. “And then I see this little thing in the audience and it’s you.”
“I’ve been to many tapings, and ever since I was 4 years old, I would always try and sing for the commercial breaks,” Maddie said. “And it’s always been my dream to be on the show. And I’m finally here.”
Simon encouraged her to sing after she composed herself.
And boy did Maddie blow everyone away. No one knows how such a powerful voice could come out of a small girl at the age of eleven.
Talk about singing high praise to the heavens!
Maddie stops after the first few lines with host Terry Crews and the crowd standing and cheering her on.
Simon is smiling in disbelief and he gestures to her to keep singing.
Baez obliges once again launching into an unbelievable barrage of range and control.
This little girl is unreal!
“I’m not kidding. In all the years we’ve ever done this, this has never actually happened before. I normally leave during the break because people do sing, so this is actually the opposite. It actually brought me back into the room,” Cowell said.
And what would she do if she won?
Maddie, in tears, says she wants to help her dad who is battling stage four colon cancer for the past nine years.
Simon then says it’s time to vote and as he looks to Howie, the crowd begins to chant “Golden buzzer!”
Mandel smiles, gets up and hits the Golden Buzzer, golden confetti showering down on Maddie, as she battles her tears once more.
Her dad joins her on stage thanks to Howie and he narrated how his daughter would sing to him during his surgeries and chemo treatments.
It was Maddie’s singing that helped him the entire time.
Maddie now makes everyone feel better with that voice. We can’t wait to see more of this little star!
