For Luke Nelson, childhood was anything but normal.
As the son of country superstar Willie Nelson, Luke spent years of his life on tour with his dad.
Despite being constantly surrounded by fame and fortune, however, his parents were determined to not let the experience go to his head.
When Luke wasn’t on tour with his Dad, his time was spent living between his parents’ homes in Austin and Hawaii. In an interview with NPR, he said: “My mom thought it [Hawaii] would be kind of a nice place to raise me, along with Austin, going back and forth.”
“Because here in Austin, dad’s got this— people think he’s the king, and she didn’t want me growing up thinking I was a prince. I really appreciate that.”
Growing up, Luke’s parents never pushed him in a particular direction. They didn’t care what he did with his life as long as he was happy. At various times throughout the years, he harbored dreams of becoming an astronaut, a pilot, or a fighter— but in the end, music won out.
Now, Luke Nelson has his own band, called Luke Nelson and Promise of the Real. The group has found success on their own merit, acting as Neil Young’s backing band since 2015. Luke also recently wrote the music for the remake of A Star is Born, starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. At one point, he appears in the film as part of Bradley’s backing band.
The 2018 movie helped Luke become a household name. With the attention, the internet has been unearthing some of his previous works— and we are not disappointed! This video, in particular, seems to have fans going wild. Since being uploaded to YouTube, it’s been viewed more than five million times.
In the video, Luke performs his father’s classic hit ‘Always On My Mind’.
The song was originally recorded in 1969 by B.J. Thomas. Since then, artists like Brenda Lee, Elvis Presley, and John Wesley Ryles have all released their own versions. Willie recorded and released his cover of the song back in 1982. From there, it went straight to number one on Billboard magazine’s Hot Country Singles chart, becoming the biggest country hit of the year.
As you can imagine, it’s not easy to top Willie’s version of the song— but if anyone can do it, it’s Willie’s son himself.
As Luke sings the song, his voice is silky smooth, sounding exactly like his father.
In fact, if you close your eyes and listen, you can almost see Willie singing the words.
