Few songs reach a level of fame to be known as “classics.” The writers usually write them in a time of emotion, and something about that emotion shows through in a way that we all connect with. It feels like most of the songs today that we listen to just won’t attain that level of nostalgia, doesn’t it?
If there was a classic among classics, it very well could be ‘Hallelujah’ by Leonard Cohen.
The original draft had something like 80 verses written, but we seem to have settled on what’s considered standard. The song was written by Cohen in the ’80s and since then has been covered officially over 300 times. It’s one of those songs that even musicians like!
The beautiful thing about cover songs is that each version adds to the original.
When an artist covers a song, it’s like they are adding their own style and skill to a piece. They bring their own elements and come out with a product that is related to the original but can reach a whole new audience. Maybe that’s what makes a classic. Peoples desire to add their voice to a song’s history.
Lucy Thomas did just that with her incredible cover.
If you haven’t heard of Lucy yet, you will! Lucy is a 16-year-old semi-finalist from The Voice Kids in 2018. Using that platform, she has launched her own career into the music industry and you don’t have to wonder why she’s been so successful, especially once you’ve heard her voice.
When she decided to add her voice to the ocean of covers that is ‘Hallelujah’ covers, she did so in wonderful fashion.
The performance was stripped and started with only a guitar and her voice. Whether you listen to her voice or see her face, you would never think she was only sixteen. She sings in a lower register than you would expect, and it’s backed up beautifully with a choral arrangement that comes in later.
Closer to the end, we get a huge moment!
Lucy stops singing for a moment, and suddenly they hit a huge key change! The moment is a bit jarring (in a good way), and she continues on singing. Really opening up her range, Lucy goes after each note with sincere passion while staring directly at the camera.
Candlelit and somber, the cover is stunningly beautiful.
While ‘Hallelujah’ isn’t necessarily a “Christmas song,” it feels right to be singing it around this time of year. Maybe it’s the story of love and the emotion behind it, or maybe it’s just the fact that this year has been crazy. Regardless, you easily find yourself singing along with Lucy during the familiar verses.
It’s brand new, too!
The song was released only a few days ago, and it already has over 700k (and counting) views on YouTube! By the end of the video, you are sure to have fallen in love with her angelic voice and beautiful looks. The music world better watch out!
