Ever since American Idol was released, the world has been flooded with all kinds of reality competition shows.
Though the original Idol was limited to singing, other shows have come out since that have opened things up to other talents and performers. On the Got Talent franchise, it’s not strictly about being an incredible singer or an incredible dancer or an incredible whatever.
Instead, it’s about making sure that you keep the audience entertained. While the judges do have a major say and they guide the show overall, having the audience on your side can save you in a hard situation.
And that’s exactly what happened in this performance.
The audition we’re talking about came from the 2015 season of Britain’s Got Talent.
Like any other, it started with the contestant introducing herself backstage to the staff and everyone else. Before long, she walks out onstage with her piano and a little handmade sign that reads “Lorraine Bowen.”
As she introduces herself to the judges, she says that she’s a piano teacher and that she’s going to be performing an original song. The song she wants to sing is called “The Crumble Song,” as in an afternoon pudding dessert.
Although the judges are a little thrown off by her bizarre appearance and presentation, they let her continue all the same.
After wishing her good luck, she gets started singing.
From the very beginning, her piano playing is pretty simple and her voice definitely isn’t the best… but she has some spunk and confidence that keep her going.
Unfortunately, the judges turn against her almost immediately. As soon as he hears her voice, judge Simon Cowell smashes his buzzer to tell her “no.” The whole song is a jazzy, silly one about how she’s cooking a crumble and she’s offering it to the listeners.
But before long, she gets another “no” buzzer from the judges.
Even though everyone seems to be turning on her, Bowen never lets up and stays confident—and the audience starts being on her side!
Only a few moments later, she gets another “no.” Still, judge David Walliams holds out and refuses to hit his buzzer! Before long, the entire audience is cheering along and clapping.
Halfway through the performance, she says she’s going to do a mash-up and pulls out some headphones. Before long, she turns her basic song into a techno remix. Although she’s making all kinds of mistakes and is getting wackier and wackier, the audience is loving it!
Meanwhile, all the judges are hating it except for Walliams!
When it’s all over, it’s time for the judges to give their feedback.
Still, before anybody can even give their input, Walliams says it all: “It doesn’t matter what they think!” With that, he smashes the Golden Buzzer and Cowell buries his head in his hands. Everyone else in the audience is cracking up and cheering for Bowen’s ridiculous performance.
For her part, she’s just dancing and singing onstage as Walliams comes up to hug her. Although you usually need the judges on your side to advance on the show, this time Bowen snuck through just because the audience loved her!
Congratulations to Bowen on sneaking through with a Golden Buzzer against all odds!
