Scottish culture is rich, historied and unique. Even if you’re not in Scotland, you can often find festivals and “Highland Games” with dancing, music and traditional competitions in feats fo physical strength. These include the famous caber toss, where the aim is to toss a giant, heavy pole over end, landing as perfectly in line as possible.

Another is the hammer throw, where the aim is to…well, you can figure that one out.

Of course, we cannot forget about Highland dancing!

Highland dancing is in itself competitive in nature, and often a lively part of Highland games. Originating as a Gaelic folk dance, and with a few newer formalisations from outside of Scotland, it has survived well into the the modern day. And the good news is that it’s not strictly for adult Scots. It seems that all ages are able to get involved with this long-standing tradition.

In fact, these two young lassies give their audience quite the show!

In Kirkcudbright, Scotland, during the Scottish Nights events of the summer, these two took to the “stage”, and dazzled the crowd with their enthusiasm and adorable moves. What they lack in years of experience they make up for in unbridled cuteness and eagerness to perform.

Highland dancing is ancient and holds onto many long-standing traditions.

Often dances are performed over a sword, in groups, or individually. The style is graceful, and dancers seem to be dancing light as feathers and with elegant arm movements. Other than that, arms seem to spend a lot of time with fists placed on the waist.

And as you can see, our two wee dancers have got the right moves!

With admirable gusto, they perform their steps and prance around like true Highlanders. And how adorable are their little outfits! Their little kilts, stockings and vests make them look the part in the cutest way. They’re even kitted out in the special shoes called ghillies.

They know the moves, and are learning how to perfect them.

While they do know where to put their feet, the timing is something they’ll improve on in time. For sure they’re owed a ten out of ten for passion however! As the crowd cheers them on, they take on every ounce of encouragement.

And up go the hands!

These lassies don’t stop at simply strutting their stuff with their boots. Their arm movements are perfect, and as with their foot motions, they show promising talent. You can be sure that in due time, they’ll grow to be formidable Highland dance competitors.

The bagpiper keeps the song going as they fill their audience with joy.

The cheers coming from the crowd tell us that these adorable little dancers are doing their Scottish community proud. As the announcer encourages them, so do all the proud Scots looking on and celebrating all of their culture with the next generation.
