In the modern years, the tradition was promoted by various organizations in the 20th century and turned into standardized styles and competitive structures.

The most well-known form of Irish dance is the Irish stepdance which was popularized in the 90s by dance show Riverdance.

The style of stepdance is characterized by keeping the upper body stiff while the dancer uses elaborate footwork performed on the balls of the feet.

There are a number of styles and traditions involved in Irish stepdance. It is performed in both hard and soft shoes and the different steps and moves are done with the different types of shoes.

Competitive dancers will often wear ornately embroidered dresses which became popular in the 70s and 80s.

These costumes have classical elements of peasant wear adorned with Celtic designs.

Some will even wear a wig, bun, or hairpiece during competitions.
