I doubt most people would even have to see the recent film about the story of infamous British rock band Queen, to know that the titular song “Bohemian Rhapsody” is an absolute banger. That’s why they named the movie after it! The song is iconic to say the least, which is why any musician worth their weight in salt would at some point cut their teeth on it.
And when talent finds the song, it shines bright.
One such emerging talent, is that of young Avett Ray.
This incredibly talented young man is overflowing with gumption and skill. He’s got such a spunky passion for playing piano that the word deserves to see. And for such a young pianist to attempt a song as ambitious as Bohemian Rhapsody is truly impressive. What’s an extra degree of impressive yet, is that this young lad is vision impaired, blind.
But Avett does not let that hold him back. At. All.
When he begins to play the song, you immediately question your own talents.
With equal parts talent and cuteness, he sets his fingers to the keys and the song starts in a way that would make Freddie himself proud. Pianists like Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles have proven that you don’t need vision to be remarkable on the piano, and seeing Avett is like looking at a budding version of those historic musicians.
What pushed this over the top of the cuteness scales, is Avett’s passionate singing.
I can hardly sing while dancing, let along singing while playing as complex an instrument as the piano! Ok, I’ll be honest, I can’t sing at all anyway, which is why such a young musician singing so well is so very impressive.
Thing is: not only does he sing well, but with such heart.
Throwing back his head to sing “Mamaaaaa, ooooh”, he belts the words out. As one commenter points out, he projects a real Elton John energy, and it takes very little imagination to see him becoming a famous singer and pianist like Elton one day.
Another thing that makes this so impressive, is his use of an advanced piano technique known as “crossing over”.
This is the process of crossing one hand over another (which you may have guessed) to reach the higher or lower notes. It’s a highly technical move, and one that requires a heap of practice and training.
So when young Avett attempts the move as part of the song, it’s seriously impressive.
Avett is still perfecting this move, but what makes watching him play so good is seeing how he corrects himself whenever he misses the keys. Whenever he misses a note singing, or loses his place, he continues to attempt it until he gets it absolutely right. Now that’s how you grow as a musician!
And this kid knows how to rock!
When the song reaches it’s inevitable crescendo, he head-bangs like the best of them! He holds nothing back and goes for broke.
