From the time we are children, Disney movies invite us to dream in a world of magic and wonder.
Did you have a favorite Disney movie growing up?
For some, this may mean early and classic selections such as Dumbo or Bambi. With a catalog of amazing selections, it can be hard to pick just one. For others, perhaps Fox and the Hound or The Brave Little Toaster come to mind (two of my personal favorites). But even more will argue that Disney created some of its most memorable works in the ’90s. Known to some as the Disney Renaissance, this decade brought us a vast ocean of new and instant classics, including Beauty and the Beast and of course, The Lion King.
The Lion King captured the hearts of many when it was released in 1994.
The animated musical drama introduced us to the circle of life, weaving together the lives of characters we’ve grown to know and love.
The film’s success has lived on and stood the test of time, leading to many adaptations, spin-offs, and even a very recent, very realistic remake that stepped away from traditional animation. It’s no surprise that it has remained a constant source of fond memories and inspiration.
In the video we’re sharing today, we meet a very talented singer named Sam Robson.
In 2015 he uploaded his talents to the digital world on YouTube, showing us an incredibly striking acapella arrangement. The song he covered? The ever-classic “Circle of Life.” In this video, his art is his voice, and it’s sure to blow you away!
In his fascinating arrangement, he creates every sound by himself, solely by human mouth, body and percussion.
He shares his sentiments with us in his video description:
“I’m really excited to bring you my latest project. As a kid I remember seeing the Lion King and being blown away by it, many years later I had the idea to arrange Circle of Life but bailed, due to it’s challenging nature. However 5 years on from my previous idea I decided to give it one more push, and I’m really happy that I did. Finally I present to you my latest multitrack, with as many as 50 voices at one time I have realised my vision of how I wanted this to sound like and it’s all thanks to the people that have supported me musically.”
This acapella arrangement will captivate you as much as The Lion King itself.
Robson’s talents are easily recognizable as he weaves together an audio tapestry that’s a true delight to the ears.
From what is already a powerful song, Robson takes it to another level, offering color, texture and layers. With as many as 50 layered voices at a time, he truly delivers a memorable experience.
Since posting the video, it’s received over five million views and 105,000 likes!
Robson is no stranger to acapella arrangements.
One quick tour through his YouTube channel and across his website shows just how talented he is. Self-described as a “musician, singer, composer, and arranger,” his catalog consists of a pleasant array of powerful and playful compositions.
“Born in South London, I was exposed to a vast array of musical influences and cultures. In the early years it was drums and guitar that shaped the foundation of creating music, making instrumental songs with a rich, progressive soundscape. Later on I would discover vocal music such as Take Six, Bobby Mcferrin and Eric Whitacre and as a result develop my own unique take on Acapella music.”
Using his vocal cords as his art, Robson paints a wonderful performance to witness. And his Lion King arrangement delivers in every way!
