Welcome to the Euro West Coast Swing Championships. This is the Jack and Jill. An event where dancers don’t know who their partners will be or what song they’ll be dancing to. Doesn’t matter how talented you are because this is about being spontaneous.
Impromptu is the name of the game.
Now John Lindo is a big, burly ma, but this man wouldn’t hurt a fly. What he does is dance, and you bet he is one amazing dancer. The man is an instructor, judge, deejay, choreographer and even an event director. He knows what he’s doing.
His surprise partner is Nicola Royston.
She’s an actress on both film and television being raised from a theatrical family. This New York lady dreamed of the bright lights at an early age and after achieving her dreams of acting, now dances with the best of them. She is a professional competitive dancer, traveling around the world to win championships all while having fun.
Before the dance begins, John and Nicola exchange a few laughs, perhaps even discussing what they were to do on the floor.
Nicole eventually dipping back as she allows John to slowly sway her before straightening back up. John goes ahead and buries his face into her neck with his hands on her shoulders. Nicole proceeds to wrap her hands around the big man’s head much to the delight of the whistling audience.
John looks back and sort of signals to a man dressed in black who just got up, seemingly reacting to what was happening.
That man in black is Nicole’s husband, Robert.
Nicole spins about in a slowmanner before spinning back towards John. She leans back on her partner then bends down before snapping back up for a pose which drew cheers from the audience.
Even the music matches the dancing!
Robert lets out a few nervous laughs before he collapses on the floor, his buddies laughing along with the crowd as John and Nicola ignore the reacting husband in the back. Easy now, Robert.
Take away the comedy and the theatrics though and you will see what fantastic dancers these two truly are.
It may be West Coast with a hint of ballroom but avid fans will notice some theater in their performance. All they need are costumes and a well designed stage. John is smooth for a man his size but Nicola is on fire!
The dancing tempo is elevated now.
Both dancers make their way to Robert, Nicola in front marching herself to her husband before spinning away. She and John switch positions now. John in front, walking like a model to Robert, who in turn is on his feet giving a goofy dance before John uses his belly to push Robert back down on the floor.
Only these guys can mix and match comedy with such a dance.
The dance comes to a glorious end with the audience on their feet, cheering and clapping their hearts out. Even Robert is on his feet! This is one dance these guys and girls won’t soon forget. A testament to the talent of John and Nicola.
