A good optical illusion can make you question everything you know. It can make you rub your eyes and ponder the fabric of reality itself. If seeing is believing, can we actually believe what we see? Or are our eyes as likely to fool us as any other sense? And if our brains can so easily be tricked, do we even understand what reality is in the first place?
Before we spiral into and existential tornado, let’s take a look at how an optical illusion can actually be quite entertaining!
This band of ladies known as the “Lakettes”, have a fun twist on an optical illusion dance which is very ponderous indeed!
While they’re not the first and only dancers to perform this type of optical illusion dance, they do have a fun gimmick that some others don’t…tapping shoes! So not only do they scramble the ways that our eyes interpret reality, but our ears too!
It works like this…
With tights that give them one red leg and one white leg, they stand side by side. The arrangement is such that it places two opposite legs together, but are the same color. For example, one lady has a red left leg and to her left side, someone wearing a red right leg. The effect is to discombobulate our brains and make it almost impossible to keep track of whose legs are whose.
By lifting their opposite, but same colored legs, it makes it look as if there’s a person in between them lifting both legs.
It seemingly defies gravity and no matter how hard you try to keep track of where the legs are in relation to the bodies, it still makes your brain short-fuse.
So when they tilt their legs inward, the effect seems leg-breaking.
This is a truly inventive way to use color and dance together to dazzling effect.
Similarly, when they cross their legs, the illusion compounds itself.
And with each step, their tapping shoes click-clack in time with the music. The song in question that they dance to is “Here Comes the Hotstepper”. You know the one, with “murderer” repeating over a hip hop beat. This may seem like a strange song for a group of kindly older ladies, but if it works it works!
And the comments section proves that people were truly charmed by the performance!
And when one commenter points out that he just realized that they are all older, Linny Ram who posted the video had a fascinating reply:
Whoa, is there a breeze in here?
When they swing their legs to the side the illusion is that of all the white-legged figures being swept away. What a mind game!
