They say two heads are better than one, especially when it comes to intellectual pursuits.
But when it comes to music, can four hands outdo two?
Consider this: a standard piano has 88 keys.
With two pianists, each boasting ten fingers, that’s 20 fingers dancing across the keys.
This means that almost a quarter of the piano’s keys can be played simultaneously when two pianists team up.
While using math to understand music might seem a tad dry, the real magic happens when you witness it in action.
Just like in the video below, which showcases two pianists playing the same piano in harmony.
It begins with Arthur Migliazza, a pianist demonstrating his talent in “Boogie Woogie” at the NAMM show.
Enter the second pianist, Doña Oxford.
Initially, she’s facing away, engaging with the audience and playfully acting as if she’s not interested in joining the performance.
But it doesn’t take long before she exclaims, “I want in on this!” and dives right in to showcase her talent.
And boy, does she deliver!
Doña seamlessly blends her remarkable skills with Arthur’s, elevating the performance to another level.
She takes to the higher end of the piano, adding a delightful contrast to Arthur’s melodies.
Their performance is reminiscent of a game of Twister.
They crisscross, playing different octaves, each contributing unique elements to the melody.
Their fingers move with astonishing speed, and their spontaneity suggests they’re not even thinking about their next move.
The music seems to emanate effortlessly from their fingertips.
Their synergy is reminiscent of a jazz band from the roaring ’20s.
And just when you think they’ve shown all their tricks, Doña reaches over to play the piano’s deepest notes.
Their skill is so exceptional, that it’s almost intimidating to other pianists!
But wait, there’s more!
In a surprising twist, Arthur stands up, and they switch seats.
It’s as if playing at a mere mortal level isn’t challenging enough for them.
As they swap positions, they also interchange parts of the melodies they’re playing.
The entire act is simply mesmerizing.
Their passion for music jumps through the screen.
The way they immerse themselves, moving in sync with the rhythm, is a testament to their genuine love for the craft.
It feels as if the music is a direct translation of their souls, pouring out for everyone to hear.
Interestingly, despite their impeccable chemistry, Doña revealed to “See It Live” that she and Arthur don’t play together often.
She said,
“Arthur and I don’t play together often, but this 4-handed, switching places boogie is a common schtick among all boogie players. We are a small community of players/friends with a common love for this rare style of music, so when we’re together, it’s always an honor to ‘jam’ with each other in the manner.”
