When it comes to singing competition shows, our personal favorite has to be The Voice.
While each one has its own advantages and disadvantages, few have as many twists and unique aspects to it as this one does. For those who don’t know, the basic set up of the show is that contestants audition for a panel of judges who have their backs turned to the stage.
If they like what they hear, they can hit their buzzers and turn around. After that, they compete to get the singer to join their team (as they’re all competing with each other as well).
Still, this format changes a bit after the audition rounds.
Once the teams are filled out and there are contestants for each one, there are more twists baked into the show.
Because the judges can keep changing their teams and people keep getting eliminated as the show goes on, there are battle rounds and knockout rounds to accomplish that.
In the knockout rounds, team members compete against one another for the chance to move on to the live show rounds. With that said, that was the case in one amazing audition from the show’s 2018 season. The contestant in question was Kyla Jade, who was on Team Blake.
Needless to say, she brought her best when she performed in the knockouts.
The song she chose to sing was “You Don’t Own Me” by Leslie Gore.
As the background music played, she immediately had all the attitude she needed—and her hand on her hip had judge Kelly Clarkson cracking up!
Immediately, her soulful and deep voice accomplished everything she needed to do when it came to setting the atmosphere. Although it started off so well, Jade took it to a whole new level about halfway through when she opened up her power.
It was so good that the judges started getting out of their seats!
Although her voice kept getting higher and higher, Jade kept finding higher and higher registers.
Towards the end, she hits a screaming note that surprises everyone and brought chills to the audience!
Although the song has always been a sultry crowd-pleaser, Jade found a way to make it completely her own and to totally reinvent the source material. At the very end, she finds a way to top herself once again and to bring the whole thing to the highest register imaginable.
When it’s all over, the crowd gives her a huge round of applause—and all the judges can do is exchange shocked glances.
Though there have been plenty of great performances on The Voice over the years, Jade’s knockout round is a real standout.
While it’s one thing to have a great singing voice, it’s another to take an iconic song and completely reinvent it!
Although the contestants definitely have to prove themselves in the audition rounds, they also have to dig even deeper when it comes time to compete with one another—and when they risk getting cut from the show if they don’t. Needless to say, Jade brought everything she had and then some for this performance and it definitely paid off.
Congratulations to Kyle Jade on electrifying the entire crowd! Watch the full clip in the link below:
