“Get Down On It” is a 1981 song by American band Kool and the Gang.
The song was originally released on the band’s 1981 Something Special album. It soon became quite a hit, scoring in the top 10 of the US pop and R&B charts in Billboard.
Considering that the band sold 70 million albums worldwide and won numerous awards, the common thing to expect is to find various covers of their famous tracks.
We bring you one special cover by a Portuguese singer Mary N—she definitely knows her way around a fretboard!
This video shows off her impressive guitar skills combined with the songs’ powerful, narrative character.
Mary came a long way from being a shy girl who avoided performing in front of others to a woman who uses her deeply personal lyrics to connect with the audience.
She’s a singer, songwriter and guitarist who enjoys being on stage and reaching fans through songwriting. It mostly comes across in this video too, since Mary’s stage presence keeps you glued to the screen easily! Choosing between her guitar playing and singing is a tough call because she excels at both.
Mary N’s debut pop-rock album Patience came out in 2017, and it’s available on Spotify.
The most recent song is a 2019 single”Ready,” but we sure hope that she’ll keep on delivering the goods. Her 40,700 Instagram followers probably hope for the same thing! If you want to learn more, or support the lovely artist from Portugal, be sure to check out the official website.
The song suits her well.
Kool and the Gang is an American band formed in 1964.
They’ve released 24 studio albums and received two Grammy Awards and seven American Music Awards. They have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which we also hope for Mary to achieve. She’s chosen to look up to some interesting musicians, and we applaud her mature approach to her work.
We like how Mary chooses to cover artists that suit her well.
You’ll find cover videos of songs by Billie Eilish, Charlie Puth, Hailee Steinfeld and many more. We can say that her 12,800 subscribers are in for a nice treat—and now this cover. Mary did it so well that it could have been just recorded straight on a record and no one would even notice it’s a YouTube clip. The truth must be told—it’s almost a crime that the video is just a minute long.
We would need a separate article to cover the story of Mary’s great technicality.
Her licks and picking are amazing. The girl has simply got great nuance and physical skills. Her guitar playing is incredibly smooth and yet so precise at the same time. It’s almost unbelievable that the girl was too shy to perform at some point. This young lady was born to be on stage—she’s groovy and the world needs more funk!
The way she delivers a popular song from another era and gives it a little personal flavor is marvelous.
The improvisations she does with her Telecaster are indescribable. Mary’s got a rock ‘n’ roll soul and an appealing stage presence, and half a million YouTube views for a video that proves how therapeutic music can be. Seeing young people being creative at their homes brings back hope and faith in hard work, motivation and the power of music. Keep up the good work Mary! We love and appreciate it.
