Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. Perhaps two of the most iconic names in country music.
In 1983, both Rogers and Parton climbed to the top of the charts with their duet “Islands in the stream”. It’s been 30 years and that song is considered a classic. It was a song that showcased their talents together. Two different voices mingling in perfect harmony.
30 years later they came back for another song – a song thanking each other.
This is the kind of friendship one usually sees on a Disney movie. Parton says of Kenny,
“There’s different kinds of soulmates. It’s like with Kenny, I just see him and I smile.”
Describing themselves as musical soulmates and best friends, they have a connection and chemistry unlike any other. And it’s never changed no matter how far apart they were.
You can’t make old friends is a touching tribute to a friendship that’s lasted for decades.
This is a song that imagines what life would be like without the other.
Rogers says that “Islands in the stream” was where he and Dolly connected musically while for “You can’t make old friends” was where they connected personally. He doesn’t even care if it becomes a hit. Kenny just wants it on tape for historical reasons.
Islands in the stream sold over two million copies and is certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Rogers and Parton also got voted best country duet of all time by CMT in 2005. A reunion was inevitable.
With the stage all to themselves, Kenny and Dolly sing to each other the same way they always did with “Islands in the stream”. This is a reunion performance everyone waited for and they did not disappoint.
Even Dolly Parton never tires of listening to it.
Another chance to show the world those voices, they join forces once again. Kenny’s trademark smoothness mixing with Dolly’s delicate vibrato producing a beautiful combination perfect for the song.
Even though they were never a permanent act together, they both had successful solo careers which got them both inducted in to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Parton in 1999 amd Rogers in 2013.
“In this business – where so much of it is business – to take the time for a moment and just enjoy someone for the person they are is a great gift. And I appreciate you always doing that to me. Out of everyone in the business, she is my best friend.”
Go on, grab a tissue. It’s very rare to hear a man say that about his best friend. Especially a female friend.
Not everyone can boast of a friendship that’s lasted thirty years.
Both amazing artists in their own right, Kenny and Dolly are legends in the world of music. Their lives and careers serving as inspiration for many fans all over the world.
“It’s a wonderful journey. I’m glad I got to walk that road with you.” says Dolly to her best friend.
Perhaps as a token of their lasting friendship, Dolly posts a heartfelt tribute to her late friend
Kenny Rogers died of natural causes on March 20, 2020. He was 81.
“I think I can speak for all his family, his friends and fans, when I say that I will always love you.” Parton said in a video.
The world agrees with her. For Kenny Rogers in his own way did make this world a better place.
