One of the best things about YouTube is that it allows all creators a voice. In days past, being a successful movie star or singer meant you had to move to New York City or Los Angeles, had to have connections, money, luck and so many other qualities in addition to talent. Though YouTube requires some gaming of its own, those who are truly talented often rise above and find an audience, no matter who they are.
That is certainly the case for Kenny Holland, the singer in this video below.
Kenny is a singer-songwriter originally from Phoenix, Arizona.
He began playing music when he was only eight years old and released his first single when he was 16. Still, Kenny isn’t the only one in his family who has a passion for music. In fact, he also has five sisters who he sometimes performs with. In particular, a video of Holland and his sisters singing a cover of “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz has been taking the internet by storm.
As the clip begins, one of his sisters plays guitar as Kenny sings the lead melody.
After a moment, the others start to join in one by one.
Although Kenny’s voice is powerful on its own, each of the family members gradually adds their own vocals until it builds into a beautiful harmony. As the family hits their stride, Kenny keeps subtly conducting—sometimes stopping to smile at how well the performance is going! At the very end, the guitar drops out and the siblings go completely a-cappella. Finally, all five Holland siblings nail the final ending note.
After that, they have to take a second to celebrate!
The video has more than a million views on YouTube so far and is sure only to climb.
Although Kenny has plenty of talent on his own (and the marketing savvy necessary to make it on YouTube), what really sets this performance apart is the family aspect. Kenny and his sisters all have incredible voices and when they sing together, the result is much richer and more layered than what any of them could’ve done on their own.
