One of the best things about the internet is how it has made it so much easier to find new, talented people.
In the old days, talented singers and performers might have to try for years to make a name for themselves in their communities before getting any traction.
After they did that, they could build name recognition more broadly and eventually perform for a major media company to try to get represented. In many cases, talented people never even made it that far and plenty of unique voices get lost as a result.
Fortunately, with the advent of YouTube, that’s no longer the case.
In today’s world, we can simply upload videos of ourselves online and let the viral world do its work for us.
As a result of all this, the world has been exposed to so many more talented performers who are still working out their craft.
Through that process, the world becomes a richer and more beautiful place—and the video we’re talking about today is just another example of that process. The clip was uploaded by Kenny Holland, a singer and performer with nearly half a million subscribers on YouTube.
Although Holland is plenty talented on his own, for this video he enlisted a little bit of extra help.
As the clip begins, Kenny and his sister Capri sit and stand (respectively) in front of a home recording set-up.
A moment later, Kenny hits the record button. After that, Capri starts singing in a beautiful voice. The song they’re performing is “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” originally by Elvis Presley.
After her voice rings out, Kenny plays the keyboard gently behind it to provide some support. Even though Capri is much younger than Kenny, her voice is just as confident and beautiful as his is.
Before long, both of them are singing and harmonizing so perfectly.
A moment later, the song changes—now they’re performing “Over the Rainbow” originally sung by Judy Garland in “The Wizard of Oz.”
As it turns out, they’re not really performing one song or the other. Instead, it’s a mash-up made hugely popular by Hawaiian artist Israel Kamakawiwo`ole.
Though his version was played more simply with a ukelele, the Holland siblings do a great job doing it justice with their delicate and unique melodies, along with some gentle piano accompaniment. Just as with the first half, the siblings do the second song beautifully as well.
Still, they save the best surprise for the end.
After they’ve gotten through each of the other two versions, Kenny hits a button to play an automated version of what they just recorded back!
At the very end, both Kenny and Capri sing their own songs independently. As the recording plays, all kinds of complex and beautiful harmonies emerge as they sing off of their own voices. When it’s finally over, they sing one last phrase and end it all delicately.
Since this clip was posted online, it has been viewed nearly 10 million times—and it’s easy to see why! Although Kenny has plenty of other videos on his channel, there’s something beautiful about this performance with his little sister.
Congratulations to Kenny and Capri Holland on their awesome video! Be sure to watch the entire thing in the link below:
