Garth Brooks is the #1 selling solo artist in U.S. history for a reason.
His songs turn into instant classics that continue to be loved throughout the years.
Every party gets a bit louder when “Friends in Low Places” starts to play. Yet, it is Garth Brooks’ emotional tunes that really stand out in his discography.
“The Dance” is one of Garth Brooks biggest songs that has touched the hearts of people all over the world.
Garth Brooks was an honoree at the 43rd Annual Kennedy Center Honors.
The Kennedy Center Honors pays tribute to artists, in all the performing arts, that have impacted American culture.
That definitely fits for Garth Brooks. He took not just the country music world but the entire world by storm from his debut album in 1989 and he is still going.
How do you honor such a titan in the music industry? By bringing in Kelly Clarkson, of course.
At the ceremony, Kelly Clarkson sang such a stunning version of “The Dance” that it left Garth Brooks in tears.
Kelly Clarkson is not the OG American Idol winner for no reason.
Her voice is a powerhouse and amazingly delicate at the same time. Clarkson sings with a full range of emotions that comes out with every song.
Her voice is commanding but gentle and was perfect to sing “The Dance” in a tribute to Garth Brooks.
“The Dance” was Garth Brooks’ last single on his debut album, but he knew the powerful song would always be a defining song in his career and it has been.
“To a lot of people, I guess ‘The Dance’ is a love gone bad song, which, you know, that it is. But to me it’s always been a song about life. Or maybe the loss of those people that have given the ultimate sacrifice for a dream that they believed in, like the John F. Kennedy’s or the Martin Luther King’s. John Wayne’s or the Keith Whitley’s. And if they could come back, I think they would say to us what the lyrics of ‘The Dance’ say,” Garth explained.
“The Dance” has been a song that has helped people all over the world cope with their own personal tragedies and loss, even Kelly Clarkson herself.
Kelly Clarkson had revealed to Garth Brooks in 2020 how the song helped her get through her own divorce.
“I couldn’t quite nail down the feeling. You don’t want to crap on it, you don’t want to say that [the marriage] doesn’t count or matter, but you don’t know what to put in it because it didn’t work out like you wanted. So, anyway, I kid you not, I was listening to my playlist and ‘The Dance’ came on. And I was like, ‘No, that’s the thing. That’s it,'” Clarkson told Brooks on her daytime TV program.
Kelly admitted that she was really nervous to sing the classic song in front of Garth Brooks, but she had nothing to be nervous about.
Her rendition was so powerful and elegant that it brought Brooks to tears multiple times throughout her performance.
His wife, fellow country singer Trisha Yearwood, is loving every second of the performance as well. She seems just as awestruck over Clarkson’s talent as her husband.
Garth Brooks is the first to jump up in excitement at the end of her performance. He is just as much of a Kelly Clarkson fan as the rest of us.
